This dictionary has been produced specifically as a resource for foreign learners of Sudanese Arabic. The language is spoken in Khartoum and throughout most of the Republic of Sudan, but it is essentially an unwritten language, since Modern Standard Arabic is almost always used for written communications. Janet Persson has an M.A. in Linguistic Science from Reading University. For many years she has been involved in linguistic research with SIL International in a number of languages, including Sudanese Arabic. This book explores the influence of translation on the Arabic language, with particular emphasis on the translation of English idioms by journalists working at Arabic satellite TV stations, using a mixed-method approach (quantitative and qualitative). It begins from a belief that the impact of broadcast media on Arabic speakers is more instant, wider and farther-reaching than that caused or triggered by any other branch of mass media, as not all features of television appear in other media. The book focuses on idioms because of the difficulties associated with translating them, and also because the literature review revealed inadequacy in understanding this intriguing part of the development of the Arabic language. In contrast to other similar titles, the book examines the possible factors causing journalists to resort to idiom literalisation, including those relating to demographic characteristics. The main significance of this book is that it has practical implications for its potential audience, both practitioners and professional peers. It provides information to enable media translators and lexicographers to become more sensitive towards the logico-semantic relationships present in idiomatic expressions, and to improve their application of idiomatic expressions in their translations. Juba Arabic is an Arabic creole closely related to Kinubi. It began developing in the Equatoria Region of what is now South Sudan over 100 years ago, and spread widely, now being the spoken lingua franca of the region. It has become so well established that expatriates working in Equatoria often find themselves in situations in which neither English nor Khartoum colloquial Arabic is adequate for communication. Juba Arabic for Beginners was originally prepared by SIL as a language course for the communication needs of its own personnel, but other people needing to communicate in Juba have found it invaluable. The present course was adapted from the excellent Sudanese Colloquial Arabic for Beginners (Andrew and Janet Persson, with Ahmad Hussein) in general format with its 30 dialogues. However, due to important linguistic and cultural differences, five additional lessons relevant to southern culture are included. This course is written in a Romanized orthography and represents a widespread dialect of Juba Arabic. Professor Lual Chany Chol Born in Yomding sometime between 1947 and 1954, Lual Chany Chol Lual was a dedicated teacher who taught many students grown to become notable national leaders, including Dr Riek Gai Kok and Former Upper Nile Governor Hon Peter Charleman Chawach. Later, Lual achieved a Master's degree in Public Administration and worked in several administrative roles. The University of Juba employed lual, the first-ever graduate to be given a job at the institution, from April 1982 until his death on 17 September 2013. Those who worked with Lual commended him for his excellent character and commitment to learning. Lual was fluent in Thok Nath (Nuer), English, Arabic, and several South Sudanese languages and dialects and was well regarded as an academic. Outside of his teaching and public administration work, Lual found talent and purpose in writing. From 1995 until his passing, Lual contributed articles to English newspapers, and he worked on the Thok Nath-English Dictionary: Eastern Jikany Version. Lual Chany Chol was also an author of Book titled the " Education Problems in Southern Sudan" published in the Arabic Language in 1992. In 2010, Lual became a member of the then Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, where he and other members fought with Northern counterparts to ensure a credible referendum conducted in accordance with the stipulations of the Peace Agreement. Lual personally challenged delays suggested by the referendum chairperson and was committed to his cause. According to those who knew him, Professor Lual Chany Chol was one of the unsung heroes of South Sudan. Though he has passed, his memory and his story live on in this book.
