For the past three-quarters of a century, the United States has led the world in technological innovation and development. The nation now risks falling behind its competitors, principally China. The United States needs to advance a national innovation strategy to ensure it remains the predominant power in a range of emerging technologies. Innovation and National Security: Keeping Our Edge outlines a strategy based on four pillars: restoring federal funding for research and development, attracting and educating a science and technology workforce, supporting technology adoption in the defense sector, and bolstering and scaling technology alliances and ecosystems. Failure could lead to a future in which rivals strengthen their militaries and threaten U.S. security interests, and new innovation centers replace the United States as the source of original ideas and inspiration for the world.

This report contains the final technical analysis of the Project Independence Interagency Nuclear Task Force chaired by the Atomic Energy Commission. The task force was formed in April 1974 to provide estimates for the Project Independence Blueprint of the potential production capabilities of the nuclear industry and the resources necessary to achieve these levels of production. The task force evaluated several alternative strategies which assumed various levels of potential production. The report is organized into three sections. The first two sections consists of the introduction and the findings of the Task Force. The third section consist of topical discussions of the major resources (e.g., financial investments, manpower, and materials and equipment) required to achieve the projected production levels as well as subjects associated with nuclear power generation (e.g., environmental effects, public acceptance, research and development).

Transportation accounts for approximately 25 percent of total U.S. energy consumption and about 60 percent of U.S. petroleum consumption. Practically all of this energy is in the form of petroleum products with very minor amounts of electric energy and natural gas. Thus, the transportation sector is very important in analyses of energy demand and the potential for energy conservation.

This Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report (IPCC-SRREN) assesses the potential role of renewable energy in the mitigation of climate change. It covers the six most important renewable energy sources - bioenergy, solar, geothermal, hydropower, ocean and wind energy - as well as their integration into present and future energy systems. It considers the environmental and social consequences associated with the deployment of these technologies, and presents strategies to overcome technical as well as non-technical obstacles to their application and diffusion. SRREN brings a broad spectrum of technology-specific experts together with scientists studying energy systems as a whole. Prepared following strict IPCC procedures, it presents an impartial assessment of the current state of knowledge: it is policy relevant but not policy prescriptive. SRREN is an invaluable assessment of the potential role of renewable energy for the mitigation of climate change for policymakers, the private sector, and academic researchers.
