Covering basic physical concepts, experimental methods, and applications, this book is an indispensable text on the fascinating science of magnetism, and an invaluable source of practical reference data. Accessible, authoritative, and assuming undergraduate familiarity with vectors, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics, this textbook is well suited to graduate courses. Emphasis is placed on practical calculations and numerical magnitudes - from nanoscale to astronomical scale - focussing on modern applications, including permanent magnet structures and spin electronic devices. Each self-contained chapter begins with a summary, and ends with exercises and further reading. The book is thoroughly illustrated with over 600 figures to help convey concepts and explain ideas clearly. Easily digestible tables and data sheets provide a wealth of useful information on magnetic properties. The thirty-eight principal magnetic materials, and many more related compounds, are treated in detail.

From AMETHYST to ARTESIAN SPRING, from COAL GAS to CONTINENTAL DRIFT, from SEISMOGRAM to STROMATOLITE, the Encylopedia of the Solid Earth Sciences provides a comprehensive modern reference text for all the subdisciplines of the Earth Sciences. The Encyclopedia is primarily intended for professional earth scientists and those specializing in related subjects. However, it will also provide an important reference for students of the Earth Sciences and those needing information on terms in current usage. The book contains three main styles of entry: articles up to 1500 words on major topics such as plate tectonics, standard entries of up to a couple of hundred words on topics such as groups of minerals, and brief definitions of, for instance, individual minerals.

SI Units in Engineering and Technology focuses on the use of the International System of Units-Systeme International d'Unités (SI). The publication first elaborates on the SI, derivation of important engineering units, and derived SI units in science and engineering. Discussions focus on applied mechanics in mechanical engineering, electrical and magnetic units, stress and pressure, work and energy, power and force, and magnitude of SI units. The text then examines SI units conversion tables and engineering data in SI units. Tables include details on the sectional properties of metals in SI units, physical properties of important molded plastics, important physical constants expressed in SI units, and temperature, area, volume, and mass conversion. Tables that show the mathematical constants, standard values expressed in SI units, and Tex count conversion are also presented. The publication is a dependable source of data for researchers interested in the use of the International System of Units-Systeme International d'Unités.

Time changes most things, and physical constants are seem ingly not immune from this contingency. The publishers' suggestion for a new edition has provided an opportunity for a thorough scrutiny of the contents of this book and for the adjustment to some fourteen years of changes since the last edition. At the same time the contents have been increased by the addition of one or two new tables, and current moves towards the adoption of an international system of units ex plain the appearance in the book, wherever it is practicable, of S. 1. units. However, the habits of a lifetime are not easily changed, and it is too much to expect that despite careful proofreading the change of units has been carried through without errors. I shall be grateful for intimation of such mis takes. I wish moreover to thank all those who in the past have taken the trouble to draw my attention to errors, or to superior determinations, or simply to offer advice or criticism. For those who do not find what they seek in this collection, more complete compilations of physical constants are to be found in: Tables of Physical and Chemical Constants, G. W. C. Kaye and T. H. Volume III/28 is a supplement to volume III/16a+b Ferroelectrics and Related Substances. It also consists of two parts a and b. The present subvolume III/28a contains data on ferroelectric oxides, supplementing III/16a which appeared in 1981. Subvolume III/28b, due in 1990, will cover non-oxides, supplementing III/16b (published in 1982). Reliable data on both pure compounds and solid solutions, published mostly between 1978 and 1986 and some data from the literature up to early 1988 are critically evaluated and included. The dielectric and ferroelectric behaviour, as well as all other properties relevant to the characterization of these substances are presented in tables and figures. About 22,000 references have been surveyed with the aid of a computer. All values are given in SI units. Rapid localization of the required data is facilitated by an alphabetical index of substances and a two-dimensional survey of substances and properties dealt with in both subvolumes III/28a and III/16a.

This book sets out to demonstrate the purpose and critical approach that should be made to all experimental work in physics. It does not describe a systematic course in practical work. The present edition retains the basic outlook of earlier editions, but modifications have been made in response to important changes in computational and experimental methods in the past decade. The text is in three parts. The first deals with the statistical treatment of data, and here the text has been extensively revised to take account of the now widespread use of electronic calculators. The second deals with experimental methods, giving details of particular experiments that demonstrate the art and craft of the experimenter. The third part deals with such essential matters as keeping efficient records, accuracy in arithmetic, and writing good, scientific English. Copyright © Libri GmbH. All rights reserved.

This reference encompasses the fields of Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism in a single volume. Both sciences have applications in navigation, in the search for minerals and hydrocarbons, in dating rock sequences, and in unraveling past geologic movements such as plate motions they have contributed to a better understanding of the Earth. The book describes in fine detail the current state of knowledge and provides an up-to-date synthesis of the most basic concepts. It is an indispensable working tool not only for geophysicists and geophysics students but also for geologists, physicists, atmospheric and environmental scientists, and engineers.
