In the 1950s and 1960s, boxers John Caldwell and Freddie Gilroy reached the very pinnacle of their sport and brought immense pride to Belfast and Ireland. This is their story of friendship and rivalry, of glory and pain, of riches and poverty. Belfast is world-renowned for her glovemen. Best of Enemies explores the careers of two of the city's finest exponents of the noble art of boxing. As friends, they won Olympic medals for Ireland. As professionals, they quickly became bitter adversaries. Their rivalry peaked when Caldwell claimed a share of the world bantamweight crown in a fight that had been promised to Gilroy. Thereafter, the Belfast fighters were on a collision course. The two finally met in a bloody battle in Belfast's King's Hall on Saturday, 20 October 1962. However, that brutal night did not resolve the question of who was the better boxer, which lingers to this day.

Romance author Jami Rogers brings you a romantic bundle of what happens when love never comes with a warning. From enemies to lovers, office romance, friends to lovers, and second chances, this new adult romance series has everything you love to read. JUST ONE KISS I don’t make a habit of slapping men after I kiss them, I swear. It only happened that one time. With him. Honestly, he was a summer crush gone bad and a part of me thought I'd never see him again, and yet … today, seven years later, he’s about to become my boss. *shakes head* Did I mention that we can’t stand each other AND that he’s renting the house across the street from me? No. Well, there you go. I think it goes without saying that balancing my work life and my final semester of college is going to go super swell. *sigh* It’s fine. I can handle this. So what if he looks like Mr. July in a fireman's calendar … everything is going to be fine. Afterall, it’s not like I'm still crushing on him … am I? JUST ONE NIGHT Running away doesn’t help. Trust me, I would know. I tried it last year and yeah, nope, everything I was trying to get away from was waiting for me when I got back. *lets out a breath* Girl boss goals have been my entire life and now that I'm about to open my own bar, that goal is closer than ever. And yet, the guy, THE GUY, is about to be hundreds of miles away from me after I move. *groans* This would happen this way, you know? We finally had it right. The feelings, the timing, the … kissing. Everything was just perfect. Till it wasn’t. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. Boo! No, no it doesn't. It makes the heart hurt. More specifically, it makes mine hurt. *curls up on bed* Maybe … *wipes away tears* We weren’t meant to be. JUST ONE TOUCH “Hi, I’m Alexis, your sister.” Ew, no. Scratch that. “Hey yo …” *palms forehead* Oh god, I'm losing it. For months, my confidence has been high on how I was going to approach the brother I'd been separated from as a child. The plan I'd made was smooth. Do you know what wasn’t in those plans? Falling for my brother's best friend. *closes eyes and counts to ten* Do you know what else I didn't plan for? Not telling said best friend who I am. Nope, I settled with the mysterious new girl next door. I played the floor is lava with his kid once. Yep, my brother's best friend/the hottie across the hall is a single dad and do you know what’s worse than dancing around fake hot coals with a kid? It’s wondering who’s going to find out who I am first. The guy I'm fooling around with or my brother. In the end, I think I’m going to get burned either way. JUST ONE MOMENT My mug shot didn’t turn out as great as I thought it would. I probably should have smiled. Maybe I would have if I had actually committed the crime. Instead, I’m the walking billboard of someone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The only bonus of being accused of vandalism is that the owner's mom has taken pity on me and thanks to her I will now have a place to sleep tonight, and well, all the nights until the bookstore that was destroyed is back up and running. Living in a bookstore sounds like a dream, and it would be, if the owner's son wasn’t such a jerk. All things considered, I’m a nice person, but this guy *rolls eyes* is the absolute worst and working with him day after day is going to be my biggest challenge yet. Or, okay, my biggest struggle might actually be ignoring how attracted I am to him. I mean come on, he is a broody college guy with a smoking body who thinks I'm a criminal. It doesn't exactly scream that I should fall for him, right? And yet … I really didn’t think life could get more complicated than it has been to this point. Wish me luck. JUST ONE SPARK I just wanted no-strings-attached sex to celebrate my new job. It was a simple plan that should have gone with zero consequences. This means the guy doesn’t end up as my new coworker, he doesn't end up as my new employer's son, and he sure as heck doesn’t end up as someone who I have to compete with to keep my job. To be honest, it could have all been worth it had we actually done the deed. But no, now I’m left assigned to the office next to his with memories of his hands on my body and his perfect smell and the way he wears a suit and … clearly no time to focus on my actual work. I have a short window to prove that I’m the best for this job, so I need to keep my head down and on task. However, I am curious as to why the son of the company has to compete for this job to begin with. I’m also intrigued as to why this man was so desperate to have me one night and now, the idea of touching me makes him flinch. Oh well, no guy is worth the distraction. This job is mine. JUST ONE LOVE Fake date my best friend. Ha. I’ve never laughed so hard in my life. Solid plan right there, especially considering he isn’t really my friend anymore thanks to his role in ruining my reputation. There was a time in my life where the old me would have swooned at the thought and agreed without question, but the new me needs … what? I have no idea. I’m still looking. All I know is that once upon a time I needed someone to give me a chance. I needed someone to help me and he was the only one there. So, now it’s my turn to return the favor. Help him, forget about him, and move on. It’s the first plan I’ve had in months when it comes to bettering my life. But that’s the thing, right? Nothing ever goes to plan. Add in a few steamy moments, some touching, and the way his hand feels in mine and I can guarantee that nothing about this scheme of ours is going to end happily. Afterall, this is my life and happily ever after has never been part of my future. Let's begin with the basics: violence is an inherent part of policing. The police represent the most direct means by which the state imposes its will on the citizenry. They are armed, trained, and authorized to use force. Like the possibility of arrest, the threat of violence is implicit in every police encounter. Violence, as well as the law, is what they represent. Using media reports alone, the Cato Institute's last annual study listed nearly seven thousand victims of police "misconduct" in the United States. But such stories of police brutality only scratch the surface of a national epidemic. Every year, tens of thousands are framed, blackmailed, beaten, sexually assaulted, or killed by cops. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on civil judgments and settlements annually. Individual lives, families, and communities are destroyed. In this extensively revised and updated edition of his seminal study of policing in the United States, Kristian Williams shows that police brutality isn't an anomaly, but is built into the very meaning of law enforcement in the United States. From antebellum slave patrols to today's unarmed youth being gunned down in the streets, "peace keepers" have always used force to shape behavior, repress dissent, and defend the powerful. Our Enemies in Blue is a well-researched page-turner that both makes historical sense of this legalized social pathology and maps out possible alternatives.

After the surrender of the French government in May 1940, the British were concerned that the resources of the French Empire, and particularly the powerful French fleet, would be put at the disposal of the Germans. The British, dependent upon their naval power and the resources of the Empire and Commonwealth to continue the war, sought to neutralize the threat of the French fleet and saw an opportunity to gobble up certain French colonies for themselves. Thus, even while Britain was locked in a deadly struggle with Nazi Germany, she continued the centuries-old imperial rivalry with her nearest neighbor and recent allies. The British attack on the French Mediterranean fleet at Mers el Kebir is well known, but less often remembered are the British operations against Vichy forces in West Africa, Syria and Madagascar. As the latent threat of the French fleet was the chief source of British concern, the conflict was largely a naval one, but there were substantial land operations in Syria and Madagascar. In Syria and Lebanon, Operation Exporter pitted 20,000 British, Indian, Australian and Free French troops against 35,000 Vichy French who fought with much greater skill and determination than expected. Operation Ironclad, the invasion of Madagascar, saw three brigades of infantry, supported by light tanks, make the first large scale British amphibious assault since the ill-fated Gallipoli landings in WWI. John D Grainger narrates and analyses all the British operations, by land, sea and air, against the French up to the Anglo-American Torch landings in North Africa. He reveals the initial reluctance of the British forces to really get stuck into their erstwhile allies and the reverses that resulted from underestimating the will of the Vichy French to fight. The complicating factor of De Gaulle's Free French is another major theme. Above all, what emerges is that these are fascinating campaigns in their own right that have been unduly neglected.

"With uncommon sensitivity and intelligence... [this] book offers parents a window into their kids' often tumultuous relationships with classmates." - Time Friends broaden our children’s horizons, share their joys and secrets, and accompany them on their journeys into ever wider worlds. But friends can also gossip and betray, tease and exclude. Children can cause untold suffering, not only for their peers but for parents as well. In this wise and insightful book, psychologist Michael Thompson, Ph.D., and children’s book author Catherine O’Neill Grace, illuminate the crucial and often hidden role that friendship plays in the lives of children from birth through adolescence. Drawing on fascinating new research as well as their own extensive experience in schools, Thompson and Grace demonstrate that children’s friendships begin early–in infancy–and run exceptionally deep in intensity and loyalty. As children grow, their friendships become more complex and layered but also more emotionally fraught, marked by both extraordinary intimacy and bewildering cruelty. As parents, we watch, and often live through vicariously, the tumult that our children experience as they encounter the “cool” crowd, shifting alliances, bullies, and disloyal best friends. Best Friends, Worst Enemies brings to life the drama of childhood relationships, guiding parents to a deeper understanding of the motives and meanings of social behavior. Here you will find penetrating discussions of the difference between friendship and popularity, how boys and girls deal in unique ways with intimacy and commitment, whether all kids need a best friend, why cliques form and what you can do about them. Filled with anecdotes that ring amazingly true to life, Best Friends, Worst Enemies probes the magic and the heartbreak that all children experience with their friends. Parents, teachers, counselors–indeed anyone who cares about children–will find this an eye-opening and wonderfully affirming book. "Relevant and compelling... Parents will be wiser for reading." - The Boston Globe "The stories in this book come from many perspectives - those of therapists, educators, and parents. The wise, kind authors give us a fresh and cogent analysis of this critically important issue." - Mary Pipher, Ph.D., author of Reviving Ophelia

The thrilling story of two Cold War spies, CIA case officer Jack Platt and KGB agent Gennady Vasilenko -- improbable friends at a time when they should have been anything but. In 1978, CIA maverick Jack Platt and KGB agent Gennady Vasilenko were new arrivals on the Washington, DC intelligence scene, with Jack working out of the CIA's counterintelligence office and Gennady out of the Soviet Embassy. Both men, already notorious iconoclasts within their respective agencies, were assigned to seduce the other into betraying his country in the urgent final days of the Cold War, but instead the men ended up becoming the best of friends-blood brothers. Theirs is a friendship that never should have happened, and their story is chock full of treachery, darkly comic misunderstandings, bureaucratic inanity, the Russian Mafia, and landmark intelligence breakthroughs of the past half century. In Best of Enemies, two espionage cowboys reveal how they became key behind-the-scenes players in solving some of the most celebrated spy stories of the twentieth century, including the crucial discovery of the Soviet mole Robert Hanssen, the 2010 Spy Swap which freed Gennady from Soviet imprisonment, and how Robert De Niro played a real-life role in helping Gennady stay alive during his incarceration in Russia after being falsely accused of spying for the Americans. Through their eyes, we see the distinctions between the Russian and American methods of conducting espionage and the painful birth of the new Russia, whose leader, Vladimir Putin, dreams he can roll back to the ideals of the old USSR.

John “Iwan” Demjanjuk was at the center of one of history’s most complex war crimes trials. But why did it take almost sixty years for the United States to bring him to justice as a Nazi collaborator? The answer lies in the annals of the Cold War, when fear and paranoia drove American politicians and the U.S. military to recruit “useful” Nazi war criminals to work for the United States in Europe as spies and saboteurs, and to slip them into America through loopholes in U.S. immigration policy. During and after the war, that same immigration policy was used to prevent thousands of Jewish refugees from reaching the shores of America. The long and twisted saga of John Demjanjuk, a postwar immigrant and auto mechanic living a quiet life in Cleveland until 1977, is the final piece in the puzzle of American government deceit. The White House, the Departments of War and State, the FBI and the CIA supported policies that harbored Nazi war criminals and actively worked to hide and shelter them from those who dared to investigate and deport them. The heroes in this story are men and women such as Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman and Justice Department prosecutor Eli Rosenbaum, who worked for decades to hold hearings, find and investigate alleged Nazi war criminals, and successfully prosecute them for visa fraud. But it was not until the conviction of John Demjanjuk in Munich in 2011 as an SS camp guard serving at the Sobibor death camp that this story of deceit can be told for what it is: a shameful chapter in American history. Riveting and deeply researched, Useful Enemies is the account of one man’s criminal past and its devastating consequences, and the story of how America sacrificed its moral authority in the wake of history’s darkest moment.
