Excerpt from Elementary Logic Books on Logic Often begin with what professes to be a definition Of the Science. And if by a definition all that is meant is a vague general statement of aim or purpose, that is easy to give; the aim Of Logic, always and every where, is to' study the difference between good and bad reasoning. Even the loftiest and least mundane kind Of Logic cannot really escape from this purpose; for what interest could there be in ideally perfect truths if no one was ever in the least danger of forgetting them? It was the liability of mankind to reason badly that first called Logic into existence, and that still makes the study worth while; and to confess its lack Of power to detect bad reasoning, or to boast of a lack Of interest in doing this, would be fatal to its claims. The general aim Of Logic, then, is clear. But real difficulties begin as soon as we try to get the scope and method of the Science into its definition, for thereby we run'a risk Of begging the very important ques tion whether a particular limitation of scope, or a particular method, is a help or a hindrance in achieving the aim. There is no general agreement on this point. Indeed that is a mild way of putting it, for we live' in times when there is a widespread and growing revolt against certain Old methods and Old limitations Of Logic which have come. Excerpt from An Elementary Handbook of Logic The volume departs in two particulars from the common method of treatment. First, a distinction has been drawn between the Act of Inference and the Process of Inference, and a separate chapter has been devoted to each. This will probably be found to simplify the explanation of Reasoning and to bring out the essential identity of form which underlies the various types of argument. The present text book is intended as an introduction to elementary logic. Its content, structure, and manner have been determined in large measure - perhaps 'caused' is the better word- by certain desiderata about which the reader should be informed at the outset. The leading idea is that even an introductory treatment of logic may profitably be fashioned around a rigorous framework.

Excerpt from Elementary Logic for University and Certificate Students: An Enlarged and Revised Edition of "Logic and Education"; An Elementary Text-Book of Deductive and Inductive Logic This book is intended for students commencing the study Of Logic. It is an elementary exposition of the subject on traditional lines. Modern logicians have added many refine ments to the analysis which has been generally received since the days of Aristotle. But the more subtle questions of criticism can only be appreciated intelligently after the elements Of the subject have been mastered. A brief account of the more important reforms in logical doctrine is given in the Appendix now added. The treatment will be found sufficiently full for the preliminary examinations at the Universities, and for the purposes of students preparing for any of the various examinations for a Teacher's Certificate. In the present edition the exposition of Inductive Logic has been considerably extended, and will now be found ample for all elementary purposes. Excerpt from Elementary Logic in 10 Chapters: Designed for Use in Schools, Academies and Colleges With becoming deference we must say that we have found no work on Logic since Aristotle's, which lays down the foundation, the elements and processes of Reasoning and builds thereon, although they all, in some subsequent part of the book, teach that the Primary Laws of Thought constitute the foundation, and give the elements and processes as though they were secondary matters. Excerpt from The Elements of Logic: A d104-Book for Schools and Colleges; The Elementary Lessons in Logic Except in a few places, where special notice is given, I have abstained from putting forward any views not commonly accepted by teachers of logic; and I have throughout devoted more attention to describing clearly and simply the doctrines in which logicians generally agree, than discussing the points in which there is a difference of opinion. The recent logical discoveries of Sir W. Hamilton, Archbishop Thomson, Prof. De Morgan, and especially the late Prof. Boole, cannot yet be fully adopted in an ele mentary work, but I have attempted to give a clear notion of the results to which they inevitably lead.
