"Gregory started to speak but a warning pressure of the big fingers restrained him. His companion led the way. He followed in silence. Through the winding streets of the little fishing village they went, the familiar landmarks about them looming grotesque and mystical in the low-hanging fog. At length the acrid air of the sea assailed their nostrils and the silence of the night was broken by the noisy splashing of a marsh-loon. "

It is 1865 and the French are in Mexico. An Austrian, Maximilian, is the Emperor. President Benito Juarez and the Republican government are in Chihuahua, where he is resisting the French and waging a political war with the Catholic Church. The United States is too deep in its own civil war to do anything about the French invasion. None of that is the biggest problem, however. That problem is Vampires, specifically "The Devil" and his subordinate "The New Christ." They are coming to Mexico to make Vampires from the very many faithful Catholics. Once turned, the baptismal mark on their foreheads becomes a burning cross, and they are the most powerful of the Undead. Then, if The Devil's designs come to fruition, they will build an army in the United States, and then move on to Europe, and so the world. All that the Catholics and the Juaristas and the French have to place in front of this plague is a Priest who was born of a dark prophesy and raised to kill, and a Nun born to save him.
