DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Eighteenth Century Nonconformity The following chapters are an attempt to separate the mass of detail in the history of Eighteenth Century Nonconformity, and to show the principles of development which were at work. It will be readily recognised by those acquainted with the period, that countless illustrations could have been given of the subjects referred to. It is hoped that what has been written will be sufficient to create interest, as well as to further local research, without which the complete history of Nonconformity will never be known. Thanks are sincerely offered to the Librarian of the Memorial Hall Library, London, the Librarian of the Dr. Williams' Library, Messrs. Nicholson and Axon, Mr. R. S. Robson, and particularly to Professor Tout and the Rev. Alexander Gordon, the latter having kindly read the proof-sheets. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Nonconformists of England and Wales, the Protestants outside the Church of England, were particularly numerous in the Victorian years. These Methodists, Congregationalists, Baptists, Quakers, Unitarians, and others helped shape society and made their mark in politics. This book explains the main characteristics of each denomination and examines the circumstances that enabled them to grow. It evaluates the main academic hypothesis about their role and points to signs of their subsequent decline in the twentieth century. Here is a succinct account of an important dimension of the Christian past in Britain.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKNot all our ancestors were Church of England, of even Catholic. A fair number, particularly after the start of the eighteenth century, joined other denominations such as Baptists, Congregationalists or Methodists. Although the State at various periods did its best to eradicate Catholicism and all forms of Protestant nonconformity, particularly during the late-sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, large numbers persisted in their thinking and were persecuted for their beliefs. Therefore, it is quite usual, almost expected, for those researching their family in England and Wales to find it includes religious dissenters. Identifying these folk is not always straightforward: they may have continued to use the local parish church for their baptisms, marriages and burials; and may have belonged to congregations that kept few if any records. But there are often clues. Their beliefs, at variance to those of the Anglican Church, may have been short-lived or they may have lasted through many generations and perhaps still persist today. As more and more records relating to Protestant nonconformists become available online, the task in discovering more about them is becoming easier. And that trend is sure to continue.
