The book introduces the development of science education in the Arab Gulf states and presents a critical analysis of current issues and concerns in educational research in science education. The key purpose is to provide some perspectives on the state of science education in Gulf and to share experiences with international scholars about the impact of the innovations and reforms implemented in science education in Arabian Gulf. But Science Education in the Arab Gulf States also intends to present new visions and to make suggestions and recommendations about the contribution of science education to prepare students in the knowledge age. The volume is organised into three main sections. The first section addresses the current practices and challenges in science education in some of the Arab Gulf states. This section sheds critically the light on the challenges and problems that hinder or constrain the implementation of innovations in science education. The second section analyses the science educational reforms and innovations that are being implemented in the Arabian Gulf. This section presents experiences and research with using new approaches to teaching and learning in science classrooms in some of the Arab Gulf states. The third section discusses the socio-cultural issues that have impacted on shaping and reshaping the science education in the Arabian Gulf. This multidisciplinary volume highlights the transformed nature of the relationship between higher education and society in the 21st century. In particular, it argues that the development of the global university, especially in the non-western world, has transformed the traditional understanding of the relationship between higher education and society. This has important implications for the relations of state, as education has not only become an object of national development policy but for many states an important export. The history of the university reflects the decisive social transformations which have given definition and identity to both new nations and modern societies. In the post-war period, universities in the industrialized world underwent a radical shift. The mass expansion of higher education ensured that universities were no longer centers designed to train youth to assume the leadership positions held by previous generations. Instead universities were to become centers where job skills could be imparted and knowledge produced, refined and used in the newly emerging Cold War economies, and where students could develop the skills necessary for employment in a changing world. Rather than focusing on the refinement of future leaders, the task of the university became linked to the development of economically exploitable technical knowledge. A shift of comparable magnitude is now ongoing in the nature of higher education itself. Globalization has led to the growth of knowledge communities around the world, mirroring the rise of centers for global finance in previous decades. In the Middle East and Asia the demands of the knowledge-based economy have led to the opening of new indigenous universities and branch campuses and partnerships with established European and North American universities. Education City in Qatar, for instance, has received or been pledged more than 200 billion dollars since its inception. The growth of new indigenous universities has altered the traditional role of the university further, increasing the emphasis on courses which are close to the marketplace. These new partnerships have contributed to the creation of what is now referred to as the global university.
Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach
This book is based on the proceedings of the Second Annual Education Conference of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), entitled “Essentials of School Education in the United Arab Emirates” held on October 3–4, 2011. The Second Annual Education Conference tackled the essentials of school education in the UAE through the examination of various issues including the role of national policies and legislation in developing education systems; the relationship between Emirati society and the education process; domestic and international pedagogical philosophies; fundamentals of teacher training and student development; curricula reform; the role of technology in the advancement of education; and fundamentals necessary to ensure standards of educational excellence in the UAE. This Conference came as a continuation of the vision adopted by the ECSSR that seeks to raise the quality of education, examine future developments and identify obstacles that may impede educational progress in the country. In addition to organizing past seminars, panel sessions and lectures that dealt with educational issues and publishing material on the subject, the ECSSR has formed a strategic outlook specifically for education in the UAE, and the Arabian Gulf region in general, and has undertaken the responsibility of tackling all issues and problems related to this topic. This strategic outlook for education adopted by the ECSSR is inspired by the leadership in the country, which considers advancing education as the engine of national development and seeks to raise the standard of education in the country to be among the five most advanced educational systems in the world. Therefore, the advancement of education, in quantity and quality, has been at the forefront of development in the country in recognition of it being the key to the knowledge economy and guarantees national progress. In addition, the various strategic development plans drafted by the government depend almost completely on the quality of national education in the coming decades. The sessions of this Conference and the ensuing discussions and comments compiled in this book have highlighted the importance of research and development related to education—a role that the ECSSR proudly undertakes through its unique events, seminars and lectures attended by some of the best minds in the world of education.
