This is a deconstruction of a selection drawn from the collected works of Xi Jinping from 2012 to 2017 specifically dealing with Xi Jinping's discourse of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for the New Era. For Xi Jinping New Era is the historical epoch in which China has to attain its Two Centenary Goals of becoming a moderately prosperous society by 2022 and attaining the rejuvenation of China, the Chinese Dream by 2049. Serialized television drama (dianshiju), perhaps the most popular and influential cultural form in China over the past three decades, offers a wide and penetrating look at the tensions and contradictions of the post-revolutionary and pro-market period. Zhong Xueping’s timely new work draws attention to the multiple cultural and historical legacies that coexist and challenge each other within this dominant form of story telling. Although scholars tend to focus their attention on elite cultural trends and avant garde movements in literature and film, Zhong argues for recognizing the complexity of dianshiju’s melodramatic mode and its various subgenres, in effect "refocusing" mainstream Chinese culture. This book explores frontier issues concerning the localization of Marxism in China by examining historical processes, cultural implications, and contemporary perspectives on this process of indigenization. Emerging in the 1840s in Germany, Marxism has evolved from a German, European, and Western idea into a Chinese, Asian, and Eastern one. This title seeks to answer the question of how Marxism has been adapted to the Chinese context and how it migrated the regions.
