DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book considers the architect Le Corbusier’s encounters with Australia and New Zealand as a two-way exchange, showing the impact of his ideas and projects on architects of the region whilst also revealing counterinfluences on Le Corbusier in his post-war career that were activated by his contacts. Compiled from detailed archival research undertaken at the Fondation Le Corbusier, Paris, and nationally based archives, Le Corbusier in the Antipodes brings together a set of episodes placing them in context with the history of modern art, architecture and urbanism in 20th century Australia and New Zealand. Key exchanges between Le Corbusier and others never before described are presented and analyzed, including Le Corbusier’s contact with Australian architect Harry Seidler at Chandigarh, Le Corbusier’s drawing of the plan of Adelaide in 1950 and his creative collaboration with Jorn Utzon on art for the Sydney Opera House. This book also includes analysis of previously unseen Le Corbusier artworks, which formed part of the Utzon family collection. In reading these personal and contingent moments of encounter, the book puts forward new ways of understanding the dissemination and mediation of Le Corbusier’s ideas and their effects in post-war Australia and New Zealand. These antipodean contacts are set against the broader story of Le Corbusier’s career, questioning received interpretations of his design methods and current assumptions about the influence of his work in national contexts beyond Europe.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Le Corbusier Guide presents the architecture of Le Corbusier. The focus is on Paris given that it is his adopted city and the place where he came of age. Within its environs is a representative sample of his built work. It contains most of his purist houses, and an early foray away from the crisp surfaces of Purism. This itinerary follows the outlines of Le Corbusier's life's work. Beginning at his birthplace in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the route continues to Paris, to the perimeter of France, and finally to the international scene architects, architecture, Paris. Also presented are Le Corbusier's work in Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, United States, Argentina, Brazil, Tunisia, Iraq, Japan, USSR, and India. The itinerary includes not only the buildings but also the process of getting from one to the next. On the ""open road"" it is a pleasure to remember Le Corbusier's own joy of self-propulsion in the automobile, efficiency, and speed in the train; and the thrill of flight as he experienced it with the poet of flight, Antoine de Saint Exupery. All these mimetic pleasures are ancillary to the experience of the buildings in situ in their complex relationship to local landscape, national spirit, and international vision.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKLe Corbusier (1887-1965) was the most significant architect of the twentieth century. Every architecture student examines the Swiss master's work. Yet, all too frequently, they rely on reproductions of faded drawings of uneven size and quality. Le Corbusier Redrawn presents the only collection of consistently rendered original drawings (at 1:200 scale) of all twenty-six of Le Corbusier's residential works. Using the original drawings from the Le Corbusier Foundation's digital archives, architect Steven Park has beautifully redrawn 130 perspectival sections, as well as plans, sections, and elevations of exterior forms and interior spaces. These remarkable new drawings-which combine the conceptual clarity of the section with the spatial qualities of the perspective-not only provide information about the buildings, they also help students experience specific works spatially as they learn to critically examine Le Corbusier's works.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKStudy drawings play a key role in the exploration and development of architecture in the early stages of design. Yet, these principal tools for graphic thinking have been largely taken for granted in the design professions. This guide brings study drawings into the foreground by analyzing actual drawings used by architects past and present. Architectural Study Drawings is the first source to provide a basis for understanding the primary means of graphic thinking used in the creation of these drawings. It also explains versatile applications of these drawings in architectural practice, teaching, and research. Evaluations of more than 80 drawings and diagrams demonstrate how study drawings are active participants in--rather than passive records of--the designer's graphic thinking. The author probes characteristics and properties of study drawings, in addition to how graphic and cognitive processes combine to guide design decision-making. Drawings of great past architects ranging from Leonardo da Vinci and Le Corbusier to Carlo Scarpa are analyzed. Excerpts are included from recent interviews with five contemporary architects--Joseph Esherick, Helmut Jahn, Robert Stern, Stanley Tigerman, and Peter Eisenman. Readers will learn from these masters how to enhance the value of study drawings in various design situations. Throughout, the author clarifies how theoretical aspects of study drawings relate to actual design practice. Detailed chapters discuss key topics such as: * The theoretical structure of study drawings * Applications for handmade drawings * How to make better use of current computer-aided design (CAD) systems * Examples of drafting room dialogue in practice that help improve design working processes Architectural Study Drawings offers valuable insights that can be applied on the drawing board in the school and office, in teaching of both media and design, and in research and development for CAD systems.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis edited collection addresses the vital role of the imagination in the critical interpretation of architectural representations. By challenging the contemporary tendency for computer-aided drawings to become mere ‘models’ for imitation in the construction of buildings, the articles explore the broader range of methods and meanings at stake in the creation and interpretation of architectural drawings, models, images and artefacts. These critical – and often practice-led – investigations are placed alongside a range of historical studies considering the development of representational techniques such as perspective, orthography and diagramming. By also addressing the use of visual representation in a number of related disciplines such as visual arts, film, performance and literature, the book opens up debates in architecture to important developments in other fields. This book is key reading for all students of architecture and architectural theory.
