Excerpt from Documentary History of the State of Maine, Vol. 16: Containing the Baxter Manuscripts The present volume presents to students a considerable portion of the documents in existence relating to the Penobscot Expedition, which, in its day, loomed into an importance to those affected by it almost equal to that sent in the reign of Elizabeth against the western coast of England, known in history as the Spanish Armada. As the story is unfolded of the brave efforts of a people in their extreme poverty to equip and maintain, to them, a great Armada to expel an invading foe from their borders, and to protect them from conquest, it must deeply engage the interest and sympathy of all who read it. I regret that space does not permit me to carry the story to its culmination in the following pages, and that it will have to be continued in a succeeding volume.
