But things changed, and darkness entered our lives in a new, uninmaginable form. We could no longer explore our dirty intentions. The walls of Hawk Academy were in danger of exposing their buried secrets rose as the tangled web of lies started to unravel. I was tempted to hold them together. Who could forget the searing images and heartfelt emotions stirred up by 2005's Live 8 benefit? The message was simple: let's make poverty history. Hundreds of thousands of well-meaning people from all over North America and Europe responded with an outpouring of donations. It was a remarkable display of compassion. Heads of state who assembled at the most recent G8 conference posed in front of the cameras to proclaim the West's determination to eliminate poverty in Africa. Leaders of the richest countries in the world agreed that it was incumbent upon them to come to the aid of the poorest countries in the world. But as Giles Bolton makes so heartbreakingly clear in this compelling and at times angry manifesto, virtually nothing has changed. Drawing on his experience at ground zero of the international humanitarian aid movement, Bolton provides a simple, succinct but comprehensive guide to the complex reality of the aid industry in Africa. What really happens to your aid money? Where does the money go? How do globalization and trade regulations exacerbate the problem? How do government agencies waste and squander your money? In part the memoir of a dedicated, idealistic aid worker and in part a frustrated and angry jeremiad of a jaded political bureaucrat. Giles Bolton's Poor Story is a clarion call to everyone in the West to wise up to the reality of international aid, and a passionate and heartfelt plea to effect change and real relief'¦before it is too late.

Muslim Enlightened Thought in South Asia is an engaging history of the enlightened liberality of modern Muslim poets, philosophers, educationists, novelists, historians, artists and public intellectuals who drew on a long Muslim intellectual tradition beyond the “Western” liberalism of empire. Interpreting the pathbreaking contributions of an array of creative Muslim figures, the book challenges the view portraying them as exemplars of an insular and defensive “apologetic modernity”. It highlights a strand of Muslim thought and liberality of mind that has been ignored by scholars obsessed with dire and dour theologians. This book questions both the presumptions of historians of liberalism that exclude Muslims from the domain of modern liberal thought and the predilections of those scholars of Islam who lean solely on discovering theological rigidity among ulama. It analyzes the forces that have contributed to the narrowing of intellectual space since the late twentieth century and the resilience of expansive and enlightened ideas that have kept candles flickering in the enveloping darkness. Foregrounding the enlightened conceptions of Ghalib, Sayyid Ahmad Khan, Iqbal and Sadequain on faith, selfhood, history and time – and bringing other Muslim thinkers out of the shadows, the book offers a nuanced reformulation of the meaning of religion for our challenging times. It will be of interest to a wide readership interested in the history of Islam and South Asia.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, popularly known as ‘Kala Pani’ comprise of 572 islands, only 36 being inhabited. The early history of these islands of exquisite beauty is shrouded in mystery. Occupied by East India Company towards the close of the 18th century, they were used by the British for a penal settlement after 1857. Prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment were kept in a cellular jail. The real inhabitants of these islands are, however, some aboriginal tribes like the Great Andamanese, the Onge, Jarawas, Sentinelese and Shompens, whose past is mysterious and future uncertain. The Japanese had made all preparations for the occupation of the islands a decade before actual occupation on 23rd March 1942. New hopes and desires of independence were enkindled in the minds of the islanders. However, the duration of this period of friendship was extremely short, and people were soon caught in a grip of terror, resulting in atrocities, round-ups and mass murders. Netaji's visit also could not improve the situation The nuclear attacks brought Japan to her knees and the Instrument of Surrender was signed at Port Blair on 9th October 1945. As a result of the war-crime courts, out of 16 accused, 6 were executed at Singapore and the rest were sentenced to various terms ranging from 7 to 25 years. The islands now enjoy the status of a union territory.
