The wave maps system is one of the most beautiful and challenging nonlinear hyperbolic systems, which has captured the attention of mathematicians for more than thirty years now. In the study of its various issues, such as the well-posedness theory, the formation of singularities, and the stability of the solitons, in order to obtain optimal results, one has to use intricate tools coming not only from analysis, but also from geometry and topology. Moreover, the wave maps system is nothing other than the Euler-Lagrange system for the nonlinear sigma model, which is one of the fundamental problems in classical field theory. One of the goals of our book is to give an up-to-date and almost self-contained overview of the main regularity results proved for wave maps. Another one is to introduce, to a wide mathematical audience, physically motivated generalizations of the wave maps system (e.g., the Skyrme model), which are extremely interesting and difficult in their own right.
This book presents a juxtaposition of studies conducted in different proficiency groups (elementary, intermediate and advanced) among Polish students studying English. The theoretical section of the book discusses all necessary theories, both from a diachronic and a synchronic perspective, related to the acquisition of the English article system in both L1 and L2. The empirical part of the book concerns the studies carried out among Polish study participants. The results of the studies indicate that L2 Polish users acquire the English article system better as their linguistic competences advance. These outcomes prove that L2 acquisition of the English article system is facilitated better in the advanced group of subjects in contrast to the least advanced group, which had tremendous difficulties with the acquisition and subsequent relevant use of the English article system.

The five books of the Silvae bring together the occasional verses which Statius wrote in addition to his two epics. The present work contains a general introduction, a text of Silvae II, a bibliography, and an index, together with a verse-by-verse commentary on the poems of this second book. This is the first commentary on a book of the Silvae since Vollmer's commentary on the whole of the Silvae of 1898. Emphasis is here placed on interpretation and moreover chiefly on the literary and stylistic aspects of the poems, which, compared with the epic poetry of Statius and his contemporaries, have hitherto received relatively little attention.
