This book will contain the proceedings of the XIV International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration (RD2010), held July 13-17, 2010, in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. The volume will present representative state-of-the-art research in almost all areas of retinal degenerations, ranging from cytopathologic, physiologic, diagnostic and clinical aspects; animal models; mechanisms of cell death; candidate genes, cloning, mapping and other aspects of molecular genetics; and developing potential therapeutic measures such as gene therapy and neuroprotective agents for potential pharmaceutical therapy.

This book discusses why specific diseases are being targeted for cell-based retinal therapy, what evidence exists that justifies optimism for this approach, and what challenges must be managed in order to bring this technology from the laboratory into routine clinical practice. There are a number of unanswered questions (e.g., surgical approach to cell delivery, management of immune response, optimum cell type to transplant) that very likely are not going to be answered until human trials are undertaken, but there is a certain amount of “de-risking” that can be done with preclinical experimentation. This book is essential reading for scientists, clinicians, and advanced students in stem cell research, cell biology, and ophthalmology.

Choroidal Disorders provides an overview on various chorioretinal disorders with a special emphasis on choroidal imaging. As our understanding of the choroid has significantly improved with the development of advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) and its role in posterior segment diseases is gaining new significance, this book focuses on the related improvements, diagnostic capabilities, management and prognosis of various chorioretinal disorders. It covers conventional techniques, such as ultrasonography and indocyanine green angiography as well as the most advanced techniques, including enhanced depth imaging OCT, swept source OCT, and OCT angiography. - Concise overview of various chorioretinal disorders, with special emphasis on choroidal imaging - Written for practitioners and researchers in sensory systems (vision), ophthalmologists, and retina specialists - Covers the most advanced imaging techniques in choroidal disorders, such as enhanced depth imaging OCT, swept source OCT, and OCT angiography

Since 1984, we have organized Satellite Symposia on Retinal Degenerations that are held in conjunction with the biennial International Congress of Eye Research. The timing and location of our Retinal Degeneration Symposia have all owed scientists and clinicians from around the world to convene and present their exciting new findings. The symposia have been arranged to allow ample time for discussions and one-on-one interactions in a relaxed atmos phere, where international friendships and collaborations could be established. The II International Symposium (also known as the Sendai Symposium on Retinal Degeneration) was held in 1986 in Sendai, Japan, on the occasion of the retirement of Kat suyoshi Mizuno as Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at Tohoku Medical SchooL On October 5-9, 1996, we returned to Sendai, where the VII International Symposium was held at the Miyagi Zao resort hotel in the beautiful Mt. Zao region of northern Japan. This meeting was held on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Makoto Tarnai as Pro fessor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at Tohoku Medical School. One afternoon of the meeting contained a special symposium in honor of Professor Tarnai, who has signifi cantly elevated the level and intensity of research on retinal degenerations at his university and in Japan during this past decade.

Vision is the most important sense in higher mammals. The retina is the first step in visual processing and the window to the brain. It is not surprising that problems arising in the retina lead to moderate to severe visual impairments. We offer here a collection of reviews as well as original papers dealing with various aspects of retinal function as well as dysfunction. New approaches in retinal research are described, such as the expression and localization of the endocannabinoid system in the normal retina and the role of cannabinoid receptors that could offer new avenues of research in the development of potential treatments for retinal diseases. Moreover, new insights are offered in advancing knowledge towards the prevention and cure of visual pathologies, mainly AMD, RP, and diabetic retinopathy.

This book provides an illustrated guide to peripheral retinal degenerations and the role of spectral domain coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in diagnosis and treatment. The book discusses 73 clinical cases and gives detailed information on the principles of SD-OCT and its application in the imaging of peripheral retina. Peripheral Retinal Degenerations: Optical Coherence Tomography and Retinal Laser Coagulation, 2nd edition, discusses a broad range of retinal pathologies such as chorioretinal degenerations, posterior vitreous detachment, vitreoretinal adhesions and tractions and includes a plethora of high-quality clinical images throughout. Ophthalmologists and retinal specialists will find this updated edition to be the perfect didactic resource for furthering skills and knowledge in this clinical area.

A comprehensive understanding of diseases of the peripheral retina is essential to the general ophthalmologist as well as to the vitreoretinal surgeon. Expertise in in direct ophthalmoscopy, scleral depression, and contact lens biomicroscopy serves as a basis for observing the peripheral retina. These observations are then re corded on fundus drawing paper and the Tolentino vitreo-retinal chart. This or derly sequence of skills allows the ophthalmic surgeon to objectively diagnose and evaluate specific peripheral retinal disorders and plan for their therapeutic management. The Clinical Atlas of Peripheral Retinal Disorders is a compilation of fundus paint ings by David A. Tilden based on our observations of a large number of patients over the past 15 years. The atlas is organized along functional and anatomical lines. After a brief introduction to the clinical anatomy of the peripheral retina, the appearance of the fundus as a function of skin color and aging is presented. Many of the diseases of the peripheral retina can be divided into trophic (nutritional), tractional, and a combination of trophic plus tractional etiologies. This classifica tion system, although somewhat simplistic, appears adequate for our present level of understanding of the pathogenetic mechanisms of these disorders. Un doubtedly, once the molecular biology of these conditions is elucidated through future research, the classification will be revised. In addition, there are other con ditions that affect the peripheral retina that do not fit the proposed classification system and are covered under separate headings, i. e.
