DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe energetics and mechanisms of diffusion control the kinetics of such diverse phenomena as the fabrication of semiconductors and superconductors, the tempering of steel, geological metamorphism, the precipitation hardening of nonferrous alloys and corrosion of metals and alloys. This work explains the fundamentals of diffusion in the solid state at a level suitable for upper-level undergraduate and beginning graduate students in materials science, metallurgy, mineralogy, and solid state physics and chemistry. A knowledge of physical chemistry such as is generally provided by a one-year undergraduate course is a prerequisite, though no detailed knowledge of solid state physics or crystallography is required.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book is intended for readers desiring a comprehensive analysis of the latest developments in widegap II-VI materials research for opto-electronic applications and basic insight into the fundamental underlying principles. Therefore, it is hoped that this book will serve two purposes. Firstly, to educate newcomers to this exciting area of physics and technology and, secondly, to provide specialists with useful references and new insights in related areas of II-VI materials research. The motivation for preparing this book originated from the need for a current review of this fertile and important field. A primary goal of this book is therefore to present an eclectic synthesis of these sometimes diverse fields of investigation. This book consists of three main sections, namely (1) Growth and Properties, (2) Materials Characterization and (3) Devices. Part One presents an overall perspective of the state of the art in the preparation of the widegap II-VI materials. Part Two concentrates on current topics pertinent to the characterization of these materials from the unique perspective of each of the authors. Part Three focuses on advances in the opto-electronic applications of these materials. The material in this section runs the gamut from addressing recent advances in device areas which date back to some of the earliest reported research in these materials, to tackling some quite new and exciting future directions.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis volume, number 91 in the Semiconductor and Semimetals series, focuses on defects in semiconductors. Defects in semiconductors help to explain several phenomena, from diffusion to getter, and to draw theories on materials' behavior in response to electrical or mechanical fields. The volume includes chapters focusing specifically on electron and proton irradiation of silicon, point defects in zinc oxide and gallium nitride, ion implantation defects and shallow junctions in silicon and germanium, and much more. It will help support students and scientists in their experimental and theoretical paths. - Expert contributors - Reviews of the most important recent literature - Clear illustrations - A broad view, including examination of defects in different semiconductors

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe development of advanced materials with preselected properties is one of the main goals of materials research. Of especial interest are electronics, high-temperature and supemard materials for various applications, as well as alloys with improved wear, corrosion and mechanical resistance properties. The technical challenge connected with the production of these materials is not only associated with the development of new specialised preparation techniques but also with quality control. The energetic charged particle, electron and photon beams offer the possibility of modifying the properties of the near-surface regions of materials without seriously affecting their bulk, and provide unique analytical tools for testing their qUality. This volume includes most of the lectures and contributions delivered at the NATO-funded Advanced Study Institute "Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology", which was held in Kallithea, Chalkidiki, in Northern Greece, from the 8th to the 21st of May, 1994 and attended by 73 participants from 21 countries. The aim of this ASI was to provide to the participants an overview of this rapidly expanding field. Fundamental aspects concerning the interactions and collisions on atomic, nuclear and solid state scale were presented in a didactic way, along with the application of a variety of techniques for the solution of problems ranging from the development of electronics materials to corrosion research and from archaeometry to environmental protection.
