Since the early 1900s, postcards have offered views of all facets of life in Harford County. These keepsakes document natural beauties, such as Kilgore Falls, and natural disasters, such as the ice boulders that invaded Havre de Grace during the winter floods of the Susquehanna River. Church spires dominate a bird's eye view of Jarrettsville from 1910. The streets and stores of Aberdeen, Forest Hill, and Perryman come to life. Postcards reveal the pride of homeowners in Darlington and Bel Air. This volume features the many hard-working citizens who helped the county prosper: farm hands, fishermen, smithies, North Harford slate quarry workers, and many more. World War I views of a soldier's life at Edgewood Arsenal salute the county's military. The stunning portraits in this collection highlight the people who made Harford County what it is today.

When Rome was founded in 1834, Col. Daniel R. Mitchell suggested the name because of the surrounding hills, much like those of ancient Rome, Italy. Known today as "The City of Seven Hills," Rome has been voted one of the most livable cities in the South. It is the medical center of Northwest Georgia with a population of over 30,000, and a thriving community with abundant opportunities for business, education, and recreation. Historic views of Rome, seen through the eyes of the traveling postcard photographer, fill the pages of this engaging volume. Longtime residents of the community will delight in remembering area landmarks, including the old Clock Tower, Shorter College, Berry College, Myrtle Hill Cemetery, the downtown business section of Broad Street, and the neighboring communities of Lindale and Cave Spring.

On one cold winter’s night in the 1850s, around midnight, a young nightwatchman is walking the grounds of the railway station at North Road, Darlington. Feeling the chill in the air, he hurries down to the porter’s cellar, where he knows there is a warm fire where he can get warm and have something to eat. Sitting opposite the fire, and turning up the gas, he notices a strange man, wearing a stand-up collar, a cut-away coat with gilt buttons and a scotch cap on his head, coming out of the coal shed followed by his dog, a large black retriever. The strange man moves directly in front of the fire, staring intently with a smile at the alarmed nightwatchman. Suddenly the strange man lunges at the watchman with his fist, followed by his dog who goes for the poor man’s leg. The nightwatchman retaliates and hits back at his stranger, but his fist goes through him and onto the wall behind. The strange man recovers, clicks at his dog, and both he and his four-legged companion return to the coal shed from whence they came. The nightwatchman shortly follows, but neither the stranger nor his black dog is nowhere to be found. This is the ghost story given by James Durham and was published in 1891 by W. T. Stead in “Real Ghost Stories”, and it was later revealed a clerk of the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company, called Thomas Munro Winter, had committed suicide nearby and his body had been lain in the exact cellar before being transported for burial years before. Who exactly was this mysterious stranger, why did he go for the nightwatchman, and importantly, what poor circumstances did the poor man have before ending his life? This is the biography of that apparition, Thomas Munro Winter, and the short turbulent life he had, and whilst this strange event has been wrote many times before, this book is the first time the full, or at least most of the facts of his life, and that of his widowed wife, have been laid out to rest, if only Thomas Munro Winter and his dog could do the same… Disclaimer: This book deals with depression and suicide in the early Victorian era. With original European settlements dating back over 300 years, Harford County is rich in evidence of its past inhabitants. Images from the past 100 years show the early movie theaters that stood in Aberdeen, Bel Air, and Havre de Grace, the graceful iron bridge that crossed Deer Creek, the grand stone Archer home with farm animals wandering outside the front door, the general store at Carsins Run, and much more. Historic photographs and postcards document the people who have lived in Harford County, the places they have built, and their way of life. Present-day photographs taken for this book reveal the changes that have occurred. These pages showcase streetscapes, stores, restaurants, homes, schools, and churches from Jarrettsville to Darlington and Cardiff to Riverside. Some are all but forgotten, some have been repurposed, and some have been magnificently restored. Through vintage and modern photographs and postcards, Harford County is revealed then and now.
