What do you know about the occult? Michael Deville knew very little. He is suffering from the effects of a terminal illness and lives with his wife Helena Rose, his only companion, who is a working nurse. During the long periods of time when he finds himself alone, Michael occupies himself by reading through old papers and documents that he found in the spare room, some of which were decidedly unusual. Michael finds himself experiencing particularly disturbing hallucinations that seem to be connected in some indefinable way to the strange manuscripts he had discovered. Are they dreams; or perhaps visions of times from a distant past? Times that held him trapped in history – his history? What is the connection between The Count and the Convent of the Golden Orb? Who is the Man in Black?

Regression diagnostics are methods for determining whether a regression model that has been fit to data adequately represents the structure of the data. For example, if the model assumes a linear (straight-line) relationship between the response and an explanatory variable, is the assumption of linearity warranted? Regression diagnostics not only reveal deficiencies in a regression model that has been fit to data but in many instances may suggest how the model can be improved. The Second Edition of this bestselling volume by John Fox considers two important classes of regression models: the normal linear regression model (LM), in which the response variable is quantitative and assumed to have a normal distribution conditional on the values of the explanatory variables; and generalized linear models (GLMs) in which the conditional distribution of the response variable is a member of an exponential family. R code and data sets for examples within the text can be found on an accompanying website.

Regression Analysis for Social Sciences presents methods of regression analysis in an accessible way, with each method having illustrations and examples. A broad spectrum of methods are included: multiple categorical predictors, methods for curvilinear regression, and methods for symmetric regression. This book can be used for courses in regression analysis at the advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate level in the social and behavioral sciences. Most of the techniques are explained step-by-step enabling students and researchers to analyze their own data. Examples include data from the social and behavioral sciences as well as biology, making the book useful for readers with biological and biometrical backgrounds. Sample command and result files for SYSTAT are included in the text. - Presents accessible methods of regression analysis - Includes a broad spectrum of methods - Techniques are explained step-by-step - Provides sample command and result files for SYSTAT

In the last decade, the familiar problem of the regress of reasons has returned to prominent consideration in epistemology. And with the return of the problem, evaluation of the options available for its solution is begun anew. Reason’s regress problem, roughly put, is that if one has good reasons to believe something, one must have good reason to hold those reasons are good. And for those reasons, one must have further reasons to hold they are good, and so a regress of reasons looms. In this new study, Aikin presents a full case for infinitism as a response to the problem of the regress of reasons. Infinitism is the view that one must have a non-terminating chain of reasons in order to be justified. The most defensible form of infinitism, he argues, is that of a mixed theory – that is, epistemic infinitism must be consistent with and integrate other solutions to the regress problem.

Spatial Regression Models for the Social Sciences shows researchers and students how to work with spatial data without the need for advanced mathematical statistics. Focusing on the methods that are commonly used by social scientists, Guangqing Chi and Jun Zhu explain what each method is and when and how to apply it by connecting it to social science research topics. Throughout the book they use the same social science example to demonstrate applications of each method and what the results can tell us.
