Excerpt from The Speeches of Daniel Webster I beg leave to take up these propositions in succession, and to give them those answers which to my mind are satisfactory. Let us examine the first: it is because Aaron Burr, not being present on the island at the time of the assemblage, cannot be a principal in the treason within the constitutional definition or the laws of England. Excerpt from The Life of Daniel Webster Captain Webster was one of the settlers of the newly granted township of Salisbury, and received an allotment in its northerly portion. More ad venturous than others of the company, he cut his way deeper into the wilderness, and made the path he could not find. At this time his nearest civilized neighbors on the northwest were at Montreal. The following allusion of Mr. Webster to his birthplace will be read with interest. It is from a speech delivered before a great public assembly at Saratoga, in the year 1840. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The True Daniel Webster The material for a life of Webster is largely contained in his speeches and letters. For nearly two generations after his death the principal collection of these was an edition of his speeches in six volumes, published in 1851, edited by his lifelong friend, fellow-orator and pupil, Edward Everett, and two volumes of his letters edited by his son Fletcher Webster. These contained by no means all his writings, most of which in their original manuscript form have been concentrated in the New Hampshire Historical Society, at Concord, which is the richest collection of them, and the Sanborn collection in New York. The Greenough collection at Washington consists principally of letters from Websters correspondents. There are, of course, numerous letters still owned by individuals, and, unfortunately, large numbers of probably valuable letters, like those to his daughter Julia and to his English correspondents, have been lost or destroyed. In 1902 Mr. C. H. Van Tyne edited a large volume of most interesting letters from these various sources arranged so as to reveal Webster as the politician, statesman, farmer, sportsman, and in other phases of his life. In the following year the same publishers who had brought out the six-volume edition of his speeches in 1851 issued the National Edition of all his writings, both letters and speeches, in eighteen volumes. This edition, an admirable piece of book making, contains even his boyish compositions; and while not including literally everything, has thrown an immense additional light upon his life and opinions. The mass of his writings now accessible in these editions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Daniel Webster captured the hearts and imagination of the American people of the first half of the nineteenth century. This bibliography on Webster brings together for the first time a comprehensive guide to the vast amount of literature written by and about this extraordinary man who dwarfed most of his contemporaries. This bibliography also provides references to materials on slavery, the tariff, banking, Indian affairs, legal and constitutional development, international affairs, western expansion, and economic and political developments in general. This bibliography is divided into fifteen sections and covers every aspect of Webster's distinguished career. Sections I and II deal primarily with Webster's writings and with those of his contemporaries. Sections III through X cover the literature dealing with his family background; childhood and education, his long service in the United States House of Representatives and in the Senate, his two stints as secretary of state, and his career in law. Section X provides guidance in locating materials relating to his associates. Finally, Sections XI through XV provide coverage of his personal life, his death, historiographical materials, and iconography.

The debates between Daniel Webster of Massachusetts and Robert Hayne of South Carolina gave fateful utterance to the differing understandings of the nature of the American Union that had come to predominate in the North and the South by 1830. To Webster, the Union was the indivisible expression of one nation of people. To Hayne, the Union was the voluntary compact among sovereign states. The Webster-Hayne Debate consists of speeches delivered in the United States Senate in January of 1830. Herman Belz is Professor of History at the University of Maryland.
