Excerpt from Critical, Historical, and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 6 of 6 The wind, from whatever quarter it blew, carried to England tidings of battles won, fortresses taken, provinces added to the empire. At home, factions had sunk into a lethargy, such as had never been known sine, the great religious schism of the sixteenth century had roused the public mind from repose. In order that the events which we have to relate may be clearly understood, it may be desirable that Ave should advert to the causes which had for a time suspended the animation of both the great English parties. If, rejecting all that is merely accidental, we look at the essential characteristics of the Whig and the Tory, we may consider each of them as the representative of a great principle, essential to the welfare of nations. One is, in an especial manner, the guardian of liberty, and the other, of order. One is the moving power, and the other the steadying power of the state. One is the sail, without which society would make no progress, the other the ballast, without which there would be small safety in a tempest. But, during the forty-six years which followed the accession of the House of Hanover, these distinctive peculiarities seemed to be effaced. The Whig conceived that he could not better serve the cause of civil and religious freedom than by strenuously supporting the Protestant dynasty. The Tory conceived that he could not better prove his hatred of revolutions than by attacking a government to which a revolution had given birth. Both came by degrees to attach more importance to the means than to the end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Critical, Historical, and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 2 of 6: With a Memoir and Index The author of these Essays is so sensible of their defects that he has repeatedly refused to let them appear in a form which might seem to indicate that he thought them worthy of a permanent place in English literature. Nor would he now give his con sent to the republication of pieces so imperfect, if, by withholding his consent, he could make republica tion impossible. But, as they have been reprinted more than once in the United States, as many American copies have been imported into this country, and as a still larger importation is expected, be con ceives that he cannot, in justice to the publishers of the Edinburgh Review, longer object to a measure which they consider as necessary to the protection of their rights, and that he cannot be accused of pre sumption for wishing that his writings, if they are read, may be read in an edition freed at least from errors of the press and from slips of the pen. Excerpt from Critical, Historical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 4 of 6 The volumes before us are fairly entitled to the praise of diligence, care, good sense, and impartiality; and these qualities are sufficient to make a book valua ble, but not quite sufficient to make it readable. Mr. Courtenay has not sufficiently studied the arts of selec tion and compression. The information with which he furnishes us, must still, we apprehend, be considered as so much raw material. To manufacturers it will be highly useful; but it is not yet in such a form that it can be enjoyed by the idle consumer. To drop meta phor, we are afraid that this work will be less accept able to those who read for the sake of reading, than to those who read in order to write. Excerpt from Critical, Historical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 5 of 6 Before this transfer took place, the last Hastings Of Daylesford had presented his second son to the rectory Of the parish in which the ancient residence of the family stood. The living was of little value; and the situation of the po'or clergyman, after the sale of the estate, was deplorable. He was constantly engaged in lawsuits about his tithes with the new lord Of the man or, and was at length utterly ruined. His eldest son, Howard, a well-conducted young man, obtained a place in the customs. The second son, Pynaston, an idle, worthless boy, married before he was sixteen, lost his wife in two years, and died in the West Indies, leaving to the care of his unfortunate father a little orphan, destined to strange and memorable vicissitudes of for tune.
