Excerpt from Skeletons of a Course of Theological Lectures, Vol. 1 My design was at first, not to publish, but barely to print a small number of copies exclusively for the use of the students. But as it was supposed that others would desire to possess them, I have consented to their publication, reminding my readers that they are a bare skeleton of the course of Theological study here pursued. Excerpt from Popular Lectures on Scientific Subjects The first and second Lectures have already appeared in print; the first in a university programme which, however, was not published. The second appeared in the 'kieler Monatsschrift' for May, 1853, but owing to the restricted circulation of that journal, became but little known; both have, accordingly, been reprinted. The third and fourth Lectures have not previously appeared. These Lectures, called forth as they have been by incidental occasions, have not, of course, been composed in accordance with a rigidly uniform plan. Each of them has been kept perfectly independent of the others. Hence some amount of repetition has been unavoidable, and the first four may perhaps seem somewhat confusedly thrown together. If I may claim that they have any leading thought, it would be that I have endeavoured to illustrate the essence and the import of Natural laws, and their relation to the mental activity of man. This seems to me the chief interest and the chief need in Lectures before a public whose education has been mainly literary. Excerpt from The Parables of the Kingdom: A Course of Lectures These lectures were left by Dr. Swete written out in full. Save for the removal of a few words or notes obviously meant solely for passing use in a lecture room, they are here printed as he left them, and we have made no attempt whatever to remove the traces of their having been intended for oral delivery. Excerpt from Physiology Preliminary Course Lectures I have endeavored in the delivery of these lectures to put within the reach and comprehension Of the first course student the foundation facts and princi ples upon which the stately edifice of physiology is built. And in the publication of them, which I have only presumed to venture in consequence of repeated requests on the part of the students of my class, I have adhered strictly to the Spirit, and as far as I could, to the letter of the delivery. This explanation will suffice, I hope, to excuse the latitude of expres sion and selection which would be accorded to off hand, lecture-room, delivery, and which might be inexcusable in a text-book compiled for the more careful study of leisure hours.
