The purpose of this project is to address some of the existing and future transportation needs of the region by upgrading mobility through Interstate 80 (I-80) corridor, improving the condition of the roadway, reducing traffic congestion and crashes, adding capacity, strengthening system bridges, correcting functional design issues, and accommodating planned development on I-80 from a point just east of the I-80/I-480/U.S. 75 system interchange in Omaha, Nebraska, to a point in Council Bluffs, Iowa just east of the I-80 Missouri River Bridge.
FHWA and the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) are proposing geometric and capacity improvements to the Interstate 29 (I-29) and Interstate 80 (I-80) mainline in Segment 3 and the I-80 / I-29 East System interchange, the South Expressway interchange, the U.S. Highway 275 (U.S. 275) interchange, and the Madison Avenue interchange to safely and efficiently accommodate future traffic needs. In support of the Segment 3 Project and overall efficiency of transportation in the City of Council Bluffs, the Iowa DOT is also proposing to eliminate several railroad alignments and to develop new, consolidated tracks in Segment 3.
The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are evaluating potential alternatives to maintain, improve, or replace a 3.9-mile segment of IA 86 from Iowa Highway 9 (IA 9) to near the Minnesota border within Dickinson County, Iowa (the Project). Iowa DOT proposes to improve IA 86 by constructing two 14-foot-wide driving lanes, and 8-foot-wide shoulders (4 feet paved and 4 feet granular). Foreslopes are a graded part of the roadway cross section that extend outside of the shoulders to ensure the stability of the roadway and to provide a reasonable opportunity for recovery of an out-of-control vehicle. Foreslopes having a grade of 6 feet horizontal for each foot of vertical decrease (a 6:1 ratio) would be constructed from the shoulder, and a 3:1 ratio from the edge of the 6:1 slope to drainage ditches. However, 4:1 foreslopes from the shoulder to the ditches would be constructed in areas where both sides of IA 86 are bordered by designated natural lands.
The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are proposing to improve 44 miles of U.S. Highway 20 (U.S. 20) in Woodbury, Ida, and Sac Counties, Iowa. The project study area is located in a rural part of western Iowa. The proposed project begins 3.5 miles east of Iowa 140 (IA 140) near Moville and extends east to the north junction of U.S. 20 and U.S. 71 near Early. The study area extends 500 feet north and south of U.S. 20 for a total width of 1,000 feet.
The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is proposing to expand U.S. Highway 30 (US 30) from a rural two-lane highway to a rural four-lane divided highway including interchanges at Iowa State Highway 21 (IA 21) and U.S. Highway 218 (US 218) in Tama and Benton counties, Iowa.
The proposed project consists of constructing an Interstate 35 (I-35) interchange at or near NE 36th Street in Ankeny, Iowa. Most of the project is located in the northeast portion of the City of Ankeny but small portions are also located in unincorporated Polk County. The project area includes the I-35 corridor beginning at the existing Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) rest area, approximately 1.5 miles north of NE 36th Street.
