Because of the advanced fruit color, it was necessary to selectively harvest fruit in order to have an adequate color range of regular-bloom fruit for the tests. The fruit was washed and sized into three groups large, medium, and small, which corresponded to commercial sizes of 163, 200 and 252. Each size group was visually sorted into three color categories: dark, medium, and light. Each color-size lot consisted of 10 fruits, and five replications were included. Could he have had such instructions as the following pages contain he might have hastened forward to profitable bearing by several years an orange grove now crowning his labors with success. He could have done this with half the amount of money expended by him in experimenting, in following unreliable advice, and in doing, what at the time, seemed wisest. It is to save others such useless expenditures and to help forward the best material interest of Florida that he has undertaken to give to the public the result of his experience and observation on Orange Culture in Florida. Nor has he undertaken this without the earnest solicitation of many who are engaged in orange growing and have witnessed his success and discussed with him his plans. The writer has not only had ten years of actual experience in orange growing, but he has had before him a wide field for observing the efforts of others engaged in this business. He has had throughout his life a passion for horticulture; in early life considerable experience as an amateur cultivator of fruits. For twenty-five years he has been accustomed to eat fresh from the trees the orange grown in Cuba, in Central America, in California, in Louisiana and in Florida. His admiration of this "queen of fruits" has led him to observe and inquire after the methods of culture in each of these several countries. During the ten years of his experience lie has frequently traveled over the State of Florida, visiting, at all seasons of the year, the various sections engaged in growing oranges, discussing with growers their theories and noting the results of their efforts. This little work, therefore, is not the result of the experience of a single individual confined to a single location, but the result of experiments, successes and failures of the many, extended over the State of Florida. Excerpt from Transportation of Florida Frozen Orange Juice Concentrate: A Case Study of Carrier Competition Induced by Dynamic Industry Growth Although not generally available in the early years, almost 80 percent of Florida's frozen orange juice concentrate output is now packed in 6-ounce consumer-size cans, 48 to a case. The second most important size from the standpoint of the trade is the 32-ounce institutional-size, packed 12 cans to a case. This is the size purchased principally by hotels, restaurants, and others who buy in quantity. About 7 percent of the 1952-53 season sales 'was in the institutional-size container. It was expected that 10 million gallons would be packed in containers of this Size in the 1953-54 season. The third most important size is the 12-ounce consumer-size can, packed 24 cans to a case. Although less than 6 percent of the 1952-53 season's output 'was marketed in containers of this size, consumer acceptance of this package has been so encouraging that several processors were planning a substantial increase for the 1953-54 season. Concentrate packed in 5-gallon containers in 1952-53 accounted for about 1 percent of the total pack. In addition to the sizes mentioned, a 4-ounce consumer-size can, a 46-ounce can, and a No. 2%-size can were tried out experimentally by several processors, but have been largely discontinued.
