"Determind to build 'the finest hostelry in the Southwest, ' Joplin's first millionaire spared no expense on the magnificent Connor Hotel. The lobby, with its Italian marble rotunda and grand staircase, would serve as the city's main gathering spot for the next fifty years. Thousands flocked to the rooftop garden, which became known as the 'most pleasant spot in all Joplin.' ... Local residents rallied to 'Save the Connor' in the 1970s but could not stop its demolition and the tragic ending that caught the nation's attention."--Back cover

Dr. Gerald O’Connor, known to friends as “Road Kill” O’Connor is a retired professor of archaeology and anthropology from Colorado State University. During his career, he became interested in animal skeletal structure and his penchant for collecting road-killed specimens in order to practice the skill of taxidermy earned him his nickname. While watching the news one morning, he hears a report of a skull found along Interstate 90, not far from his home. There is no evidence of a body, only the skull. The only things authorities can tell is that the skull is likely that of an African American woman in her twenties and it has been there for many years. Recalling a cold case in his vast collection of notebooks, O’Connor begins his search for information about this victim. An expert witness for law enforcement throughout his career, O’Connor begins to piece together other missing persons’ cases and a pattern emerges. He concludes a serial killer has been at work for four decades. It’s time this murderer was brought to justice and Road Kill O’Connor is just the man to get the job done.

This is a visual history of the architecture of tourist accommodations in Maryland's famous beach resort. These have ranged from the Atlantic Hotel to the most recent chain hotels and condominiums that have so altered the streetscapes and skyline of the barrier island. Ocean City's architectural evolution paralleled national developments; it began on boardwalk-adjacent and beachfront sites with turreted and gabled cottages and shingle-clad Victorian hotels. By the 1920s, porticoed boardwalk hostelries emerged, and as the popularity of the automobile increased, auto camps and groups of cottages developed into motor courts and mom-and-pop motels during the mid-20th century. After the 1970s, lodgings changed, with infill condominium blocks, time-shares, and megastructures casting afternoon shadows across the beach.
