Whenever people from different cultural and religious backgrounds converge, it produces tension and ambivalence. This study delves into conflicts in interreligious educational processes in both theory and practice, presenting the results of empirical research conducted at schools and universities and formulating ground-breaking practical perspectives for interreligious collaboration in various religious-pedagogical settings.
Religion can play a dual role with regard to conflict. It can promote either violence or peace. Religion and Conflict Attribution seeks to clarify the causes of religious conflict as perceived by Christian, Muslim and Hindu college students in Tamil Nadu, India. These students in varying degrees attribute conflict to force-driven causes, namely to coercive power as a means of achieving the economic, political or socio-cultural goals of religious groups. The study reveals how force-driven religious conflict is influenced by prescriptive beliefs like religious practice and mystical experience, and descriptive beliefs such as the interpretation of religious plurality and religiocentrism. It also elaborates on the practical consequences of the salient findings for the educational process.
Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit Konflikten und Spannungsfeldern, die in interreligiösen Bildungsprozessen im deutschsprachigen Kontext (Österreich) in schulischen und universitären Kontexten auftreten können. Dies ist zugleich eine Neuheit und ein Wagnis. Eine Neuheit deshalb, weil zwar gegenwärtig viel über Interreligiosität gesprochen wird, es aber an Forschung zu interreligiösen Kooperationen in der religionspädagogischen und religionsdidaktischen Praxis sowie insbesondere an empirischen Studien mangelt. Ein Wagnis ist das Buch deshalb, da Konflikte, Probleme, Meinungsverschiedenheiten oder Unstimmigkeiten, die in interreligiösen Bildungssettings auftreten, nur selten in den Mittelpunkt gerückt werden. Es scheint vielmehr eine Art Unbehagen oder Zögerlichkeit zu bestehen, sich mit diesen Fragen auseinanderzusetzen. Unsere empirische Analyse widmet sich daher explizit auftretenden Konflikten und Konfliktdynamiken in interreligiösen Bildungsprozessen und berücksichtigt die Perspektiven von etablierten Religionslehrer/-innen, Schüler/-innen, angehenden Religionslehrer/-innen (Studierende) sowie Universitätsdozent/-innen. Auf dieser Basis werden wegweisende religionspädagogische Einsichten und praktische Perspektiven in unterschiedlichen Bildungssettings formuliert, um die interreligiöse Zusammenarbeit in Zukunft zu stärken und zu verbessern.
The relatively peaceful interreligious relations in Indonesia seem to be shattered ever since Suharto's fall in 1998. Religious cleavages grew and quickly became sources of conflict. Exclusive religious truth claims have led people to support interreligious violence. Yet, benevolent religious values continue to encourage people for mutual solidarity and to shy away from violence. Religious minority groups are often perceived as a threat by the religious majority. Although living side by side allows different groups to develop positive interreligious contacts, this may differ for religious majority and minorities. This study scrutinizes the role of religion in interreligious conflicts in Indonesia.

While opportunities to learn about the religious other need to be much more widely available, especially in countries experiencing religious conflict, considerable progress has been made in recent years. Particularly promising are the new programs being developed in Bulgaria, Bosnia, Serbia, and Indonesia. But to build on the progress already made, mechanisms must be developed to enable professors in this field to share their materials and approaches with others. The introduction of Internet-based resources may be one such solution.

Nigeria, a country under a military regime for several years, transitioned to a civilian regime in May 1999. Since this change, violent conflicts between Christians and Muslims have continued to erupt. They constitute one of the gravest dangers facing Nigeria, a country with a population of 189 million people. What have Nigerian religious leaders done about this situation, especially in educational circles? Have they received formal educational training to understand the causes of this violence and especially how to provide alternatives for more peaceful relations within Nigeria? Does the current educational system in Nigeria provide the main ingredients for the promotion of a culture of peace? The absence and neglect of interreligious peace education as part of a peace education core program and the lack of an interreligious curriculum for peace education in the training of religious leaders are the two problems contributing towards the lack of effectiveness of religious leaders in promoting less violent and more peaceful living. The solution to the problem is proposed in this book entitled Interreligious Curriculum for Peace Education in Nigeria. The book develops a one-year curriculum, building on Yoruba, Islamic & Christian conceptions of peace, and teaches how to create safe, caring, spiritual, peaceful and successful interfaith relationships between all Nigerian religious communities. In the long term, the book helps to educate religious leaders to contribute, in themselves and with the help of their respective religious communities, to reducing the growing religious violence in Nigeria.
