""I know for my own part that I have no program, only the inexplicable longing to grasp what I see and feel, and to find for it the purest expression." The words of German Expressionist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, co-founder of the "Brücke" movement in Dresden, convey the essence of the revolutionary movement in the arts which overthrew the stifling academicism of Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany and led in the years between 1900 and 1914 to an amazing upsurge of creative activity. The German Expressionists sought simplified forms, new rhythms, intenser colors. The name which has been given to their movement (not by them) suggests that they were preoccupied with the expression of violent emotion; in fact, however, such artists as the member of the "Brücke" group, Kirchner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff, Pechstein and Nolde, were concerned above all with sheer liberation. Their work, and that of their great contemporaries and associates Marc, Macke, Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Klee and Kubin in Munich; Feininger, Beckmann, Barlach and Meidner in Berlin; and Kokoschka and Schiele in Vienna, all of whom worked in related styles, is a decisive and immensely rich contribution to the history of the twentieth-century art. The story is told here by a senior curator of the Bavarian State art collections largely in the vivid and intensely revealing words of the artists themselves; these he sets in context with rare sympathy and insight."--

New Perspectives on Br?cke Expressionism: Bridging History brings together highly-renowned international art historians in a scholarly work that offers the first full-length reassessment in English of the importance of the Br?cke group to German modernism specifically and to international modernism more generally. It challenges, interrogates and updates existing orthodoxies in the field of Br?cke studies by deploying new research combined with innovative interpretative approaches. This is an exciting volume of essays with an interlinking tripartite structure that charts the significance of this pioneering German avant-garde group in relation to various critical themes, namely, 'cultural and material identity', 'collectivity and selfhood', as well as 'defamation and rehabilitation'. The book is unique in the field in that it seeks to excavate specific historical research relating to the activities of the Br?cke as a bohemian yet nonetheless enterprising artists' community, and considers the contributions of the key members in relation to the dynamics of that group rather than simply on an individual basis. It thoroughly explores the historiography of the Br?cke artists' reception throughout the turbulent history of the twentieth century up until the present day.

Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Emil Nolde, E.L. Kirchner, Paul Klee, Franz Marc as well as the Austrians Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele were among the generation of highly individual artists who contributed to the vivid and often controversial new movement in early twentieth-century Germany and Austria: Expressionism. This publication introduces these artists and their work. The author, art historian Ashley Bassie, explains how Expressionist art led the way to a new, intense, evocative treatment of psychological, emotional and social themes in the early twentieth century. The book examines the developments of Expressionism and its key works, highlighting the often intensely subjective imagery and the aspirations and conflicts from which it emerged while focusing precisely on the artists of the movement.

"An indispensable anthology that immediately renders its predecessors obsolete. With its gathering of public and private documents, it carries us through the rise and fall of one of the great upheavals of modern art."—Robert Rosenblum, New York University "These essays, including many previously unavailable in English, are rich with startling new insights into the German Expressionist psyche. Elucidating the artists' view of government, the role of women in modern society, and their own ambivalence about the effectiveness of abstract art, this anthology is essential reading for all scholars and students of twentieth-century art."—Joan Marter, author of Alexander Calder

Art history made accessible and enjoyable for kids Learn all about Impressionism in this art history book for kids. Meet famous artists like Paul Cezanne, Auguste Renoir, Mary Cassatt and Claude Monet and find out why they painted the way they did. The Impressionist period of art began in the 1860s and featured art that gave an impression of a set moment in time. Kids will learn to spot details and themes in Impressionist art and will develop an appreciation for the style through this simple and child appropriate book. Here's a sample page from the book: An impression is the feeling something gives you the moment you look at it. Impressionism is the genre that takes that feeling, and makes it into a picture you can look at forever. Impressionist paintings usually are not perfect depictions of people and places. This is because the goal of an Impressionist is to show real life how the artist saw it.
