This book summarizes the activities of the Generic Intelligent Driver Support (GIDS) Consortium and offers recommendations for successful GIDS implementation. It is based on the GIDS Project, a part of the EC-funded Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe Programme.
Why this book? Simply because it is due. Cognitive automation and its system-ergonomic introduction into work systems have been advanced in the meantime to such a degree that already applications for operational work systems are slowly becoming reality. This book shall contribute to give system designers some more guidelines about designing work systems and associated cognitive machines effectively, in particular those related to guidance and control of manned and unmanned vehicles. The issue is that the findings on cognition have to become sufficient commonsense for all from the various disciplines involved in system design, and that guidelines are given how to make use of it in an appropriate and systematic manner. These guidelines are to account for both the needs of the human operator in the work process and the use of computational potentials to make the work system a really most effective one. In other words, this book is meant to provide guidelines for the organisational and technical design of work systems. Therefore, this book is an interdisciplinary one. Findings in individual disciplines are not the main issue. It is rather the combination of these findings for the sake of the performance of work systems which makes this book a useful one for designers who are interested in this modern approach and its implementation.
This book has been generated by the EC-funded Dedicated Road Infrastructure for Vehicle Safety in Europe DRIVE collaborative research programme. it brings together work on driver behaviour, traffic safety, and human- machine interfacing to review the state of the art in Europe in terms of systems specification, design, evaluation, and implementation for near- future vehicles.; Changes in vehicle functionality will be fundamental through the 1990's, and this book demonstrates that a purely technology driven approach is a recipe for disaster; integrated and co-ordinated multidisciplinary initiatives in complex system design are preferable and are more likely to deliver system efficiency, acceptability, and safety.; It is aimed at transport ergonomists, vehicle designers, HCI researchers, applied psychologists and cognitive ergonomists.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th Conference of the Canadian Society for Computational Studies of Intelligence, AI 2003, held in Halifax, Canada in June 2003. This volume gives an overview of the trends in Traffic and Transport Psychology. It reflects the considerable development of the most important factors for driving a road vehicle, and the variety of international research approaches. The first part contains basic approaches and integrated models as well as general theories and their implementation into Traffic and Transport Psychology. A study of clinical assessment, computerized methods and instrumentation in psychology, containing 18 contributions from the workshop, "Computers in Psychology", held in September 1999 at the University of Utrecht.;The first section of the work contains contributions concerning clinical assessment.
