Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2001 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, grade: 1,7, University of Lapland (Arctic Center), course: Ecological and Historical Biogeography of Arctic and Alpine Regions, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The present climate atlas will show the climatic differences between selected arctic regions from Eurasia, or strictly speaking Russia, and North America. The main emphasis will thereby be put on the difference between oceanic (maritime) and continental climate. It will also show the spread of permafrost and the localisation of the Arctic tree line, which both depends on the existing climate. In the Appendix, the climate-diagrams for each selected station and equivalent maps of the chosen sections and for the locating of the tree line and the permafrost can be found.

Anthology from the year 2002 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Regional Geography, grade: im Durchschnitt 1,625, University of Lapland (Arctic Center), course: Arctic Studies Programm (ASP), language: English, abstract: From September 2001 till May 2002, the author studied within the Erasmus exchange program of the European Union two terms abroad at the University of Lapland (Lapin Yliopisto) in Rovaniemi/Finland. There he took part in the Arctic Studies Program (ASP). This is a very interdisciplinary program, offered by the Arctic Center (Arktinen Keskus) at the University of Lapland and covering many different topics. The ASP included lectures about the Arctic in general, about environmental issues, tourism, the Sami and indigenous people in general, social and economic development, politics and international relations and as well international law. In this book, the essays and papers the author wrote and the presentations he hold within the ASP, are published. For this reason, the present book is a very interdisciplinary one, covering various topics concerning the arctic regions. The articles are divided into four subject areas: “Excursion to the North Calotte”, “The Sami and indigenous people in general”, “Environmental systems, economic development and sociology” and “Global Climate Change Debate”. “The collection of essays and papers written within in the Arctic Studies Program” is closed by the full timetables for both terms, given in the Annex.

th Towards the end of the 19 century some researchers put forward the hypothesis that the Polar regions may play the key role in the shaping of the global climate. This supposition found its full confirmation in empirical and th model research conducted in the 20 century, particularly in recent decades. The intensification of the global warming after about 1975 brought into focus the physical causes of this phenomenon. The first climatic models created at that time, and the analyses of long observation series consistently showed that the Polar regions are the most sensitive to climatic changes. This aroused the interest of numerous researchers, who thought that the examination of the proc esses taking place in these regions might help to determine the mechanisms responsible for the "working" of the global climatic system. To date, a great number of publications on this issue have been published. However, as a re view of the literature shows, there is not a single monograph which comprises the basic information concerning the current state of the Arctic climate. The last study to discuss the climate of the Arctic in any depth was published in 1970 (Climates a/the Polar Regions, vol. 14, ed. S. Orvig) by the World Survey of Climatology, edited by H. E. Landsberg. This publication, however, does not provide the full climatic picture of many meteorological elements.

In this book the eminent authors analyse the ice cover variability in the Arctic Seas during the 20th and early 21st centuries. In the first two chapters, they show that multi-year changes of the sea-ice extent in the Arctic Seas were formed by linear trends and long-term (climatic) cycles lasting about 10, 20 and 60 years. The structure of temporal variability of the western region (Greenland – Kara) differs significantly from the eastern region seas (Laptev and Chukchi). In the latter region, unlike the former area, relatively short-period cycles (up to 10 years) predominate. The linear trends can be related to a super-secular cycle of climatic changes over about 200 years. The most significant of these cycles, lasting 60 years, is most pronounced in the western region seas.

Like no other textbook, Pulsipher and Pulsipher’s World Regional Geography puts a human face on the study of regional geography, showing how larger geographical forces affect the lives of individuals and communities around the globe. It’s a refreshing, people-centered approach to the subject focusing on the stories of real people, global trends and interregional linkages, and contemporary topics that transcend regional borders (the war on terrorism, global political order, interregional trade, the global economy, popular culture, the environment, and the Internet).
