Excerpt from Church and State, Their Relations, Vol. 1 of 2: Historically Developed Considering the importance of this question at the present time, it appeared to me well worth the labour to retrace the stages through which this grand historical pro cess has run; and from this outline and endeavour the present. Work has grown. Its object is ecclesiastico political - to present, in short, an historical guide-book for the problems of the present day. I am fully aware that the attempt. To compress within a small compass a subject so vast and multifarious can be nothing more than an attempt and I shall be grateful to criticism for every kind of correction and supplementary material. The nature of the subject rendered it imperative that I should examine, in conclusion, our own position in Germany. I have considered the resolution of the Prussian Government to regulate anew the relations of Church and State to be not only right but necessary. But from the first moment when that resolution came to be executed, my convictions led me to perceive a fatal mistake in the manner in which this was done. The reasons for this conviction I have endeavoured to state in the last section. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The State in Its Relations With the Church, Vol. 1 of 2 It appeared to me a contingency greatly to be feared, that the affections then called into such vivid action, in a great degree through political circumstances, might satisfy themselves with a theory which teaches. This is an account of the ideas about and public policies relating to the relationship between government and religion from the settlement of Virginia in 1607 to the presidency of Andrew Jackson, 1829–37. This book describes the impact and the relationship of various events, legislative, and judicial actions, including the English Toleration Act of 1689, the First and Second Great Awakenings, the Constitution of the United States, the Bill of Rights, and Jefferson's Letter to the Danbury Baptists. Four principles were paramount in the American approach to government's relation to religion: the importance of religion to public welfare; the resulting desirability of government support of religion (within the limitations of political culture); liberty of conscience and voluntaryism; the requirement that religion be supported by free will offerings, not taxation. Hutson analyzes and describes the development and interplay of these principles, and considers the relevance of the concept of the separation of church and state during this period.

Excerpt from Catholic Church and Christian State, Vol. 1 of 2: A Series of Essays on the Relation of the Church to the Civil Power No apology is needed for offering to the public a translation of a work by so eminent an author as Dr. Hergenröther, and on a subject so much discussed as the relations of Church and State. The Author is already known in England by his Anti-Janus, which has been translated by Professor Robertson; and in Germany he is recognised as one of the most learned and zealous among the defenders of the Church. As such, he is singled out for especial attack by the champions of the Döllingerite heresy, and is mockingly called 'the official refuting theologian of the Vatican.' But as the English public is fortunately unacquainted with these attacks, it is needless to give that portion of the introduction to his essays in which Dr. Hergenrother repels the charges brought against himself and his fellow-labourers, and exposes the rude insolence of his opponents: showing their literary failings and contradictions, which contrast with their arrogant claim to a monopoly of historical and theological learning. It is enough to say that this work, while answering the criticisms on Anti-Janus, is far more than a mere answer. The author's intention has been not to rest on the surface, but to give so thorough and deep an account of the relations of Church and State, as to serve for more than the purposes of ephemeral controversy, and to be a work of permanent value and reference.
