Excerpt from China's Millions HE following pages contain some record of work in China during another year - a year which has been in several respects unprecedented in the history of the China Inland Mission. The most cursory review suggests many reasons for the most devout thanks giving and praise to god, and a few of these may, in this brief preface, be gratefully noted. Excerpt from China's Millions, 1886 In 1865 there were but 97 Protestant Missionaries in China. In 1886, in connection with the china inland mission alone, there are I 52 Missionaries. The following table deserves careful study. It only refers to the provinces in China Proper, which in 1866 had no Protestant Missionary. If the history of missionary effort in China up to the present time were written, it would have no chapter of deeper interest than that which told of the pioneer work of the china inland mission in these eleven provinces. Guided by 20th century theories of language, Hansen's novel approach to interpretive theory launched the modern analytical study of Ancient Chinese philosophy. This 1983 publication challenged authority-based traditional "religious" accounts stemming from 18th and 19th century missionary dictionaries and reliance on interpretive authority. "Hansen shows that one tiny grammatical question... has profound implications for the understanding of Chinese philosophy. ...This is surely a decisive breakthrough ... a great success. His observations about Chinese thought in general are always stimulating and illuminating. A book which excites one to rethink things from the foundations." A. C. Graham "An ambitious and provocative book concerning the relationship between language and thought in ancient China. ... a novel and powerful theory about the nature of classical Chinese language ... a better understanding of many issues in classical Chinese philosophy." P. J. Ivanhoe "[The] importance of this book lies ... in its engaging style, novel ideas, and rigorous argumentation, which can serve as a model for future work in Chinese philosophy. Hansen takes Chinese philosophy seriously as philosophy. For anyone tired of the superficial summaries or scholastic commentaries that so often characterize this field, Hansen's book will be a memorable and welcome change." Michael Martin

Excerpt from China's Millions: North American Edition, Illustrated, 1920 Bading recently the biography Of a saintly 'and gifted man, the following extract from one of his letters deeply impressed me: It is as if people were so afraid of intolerance that they are beginning to have no convictions at all. This was written in 1911, and it is even more true to-day than then. The precious chapter on that greatest of gifts, love, is made to cover a multitude of sins in a way the Apostle never intended, so that it serves to hide things that would have called forth his righteous indignation. World conformity, . Carnal policy, a perverted Gospel, may all be excused, the only thing for which no excuse can be found being outspoken faithfulness to the truth of God. But if silence in the face of these things is love, then neither the Lord Himself, nor Paul, nor John, had any of it, for they not only proclaimed the truth but sternly rebuked error and those who held and taught it. Possibly some earnest men have forgotten that opposers are to be instructed in the spirit of meek ness, 'but, still, destructive heresies are not to be overturned by honeyed words, nor are false prophets to be silenced by polite tributes to their earnestness and ability. If a Gospel is preached that ignores the need of regeneration, that sees in the cross of Christ nothing more than an example Of sacrifice, and that makes salvation a mere matter Of personal effort with perhaps some little help from God, it is what the Holy Spirit by the mouth of Paul called another Gospel, concerning which he said, But though we or an angel from heaven, should preach to' you any Gospel other than that which we preached to you, let him be anathema! The Making and Remaking of China’s “Red Classics” is the first full-length work to bring together research on the “red classics” across the entire Maoist period through to the reform era. It covers a representative range of genres including novels, short stories, films, TV series, picture books, animation, and traditional-style paintings. Collectively, the chapters offer a panoramic view of the production and reception of the original “red classics” and the adaptations and remakes of such works after the Cultural Revolution. The contributors present fascinating stories of how a work came to be regarded as, or failed to become, a “red classic.” There has never been a single answer to the question of what counts as a “red classic”; artists had to negotiate the changing political circumstances and adopt the correct artistic technique to bring out the authentic image of the people, while appealing to the taste of the mass audience at the same time. A critical examination of these works reveals their sociopolitical and ideological import, aesthetic significance, and function as a mass cultural phenomenon at particular historical moments. This volume marks a step forward in the growing field of the study of Maoist cultural products. “The Making and Remaking of China’s ‘Red Classics’ analyzes the creation of literature in the Maoist era as well as the way in which the revolutionary canon was rediscovered and imagined during the reform period. This book is a timely and fascinating set of studies, critically illuminating a foundational time during PRC history and its aftermath.” —Wendy Larson, professor emerita, University of Oregon “Creative works produced in the Mao era (1942–1976) are often dismissed as mere propaganda. Despite the fact that they are artistic reflections of that remarkable period, scholars have generally ignored these ‘red classics.’ This book throws much needed light on them. It is a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the cultural scene in China.” —Kam Louie, honorary professor, University of Hong Kong and UNSW, Australia

Banner-carrying Salvation Army marchers, stone-silent Quakers, jumpy Midwestern revivalists, and Prayer-book Anglicans all made up the mixed multitude sent to the Middle Kingdom by the China Inland Mission (CIM) in the nineteenth century. In China's Millions veteran historian Alvyn Austin crafts a compelling narrative of the sprawling history of the China Inland Mission. This book introduces readers to a remarkable array of sights, from the visionary, charismatic sect-leader Pastor Hsi, to the "wordless book," a missionary teaching device that fit perfectly with Chinese color cosmology, to the opium-soaked aftermath of the North China Famine of 187779. Clear, readable, and well researched, China's Millions digs deeply into the Chinese and Western past to tell a story of the strange yet hopeful result of two cultures colliding. - Publisher.

In the 1990s, China’s economic reform campaign reached a new high. Amid the eager adoption of capitalism, however, the spectre of revolution re-emerged. Red Classics, a historic-revolutionary themed genre created in the high socialist era were widely taken up again in television drama adaptations. They have since remained a permanent feature of TV repertoire well into the 2010s. Remaking Red Classics in Post-Mao China looks at the how the revolutionary experience is represented and consumed in the reform era. It examines the adaptation of Red Classics as a result of the dynamic interplay between television stations, media censorship and social sentiment of the populace. How the story of revolution was reinvented to appeal and entertain a new generation provides important clues to the understanding of transformation of class, gender, locality and faith in contemporary China.
