DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe U.S.-Associated Pacific Basin consists of six island jurisdictions: American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau. This book examines one aspect of the ties and U.S. involvement with this part of the worldâ€"its role in the region's health care delivery system. Although the health status of the islanders and the challenges faced by the health care systems naturally vary within and among the jurisdictions, in general, almost all health indicators for the islanders are worse than those of mainland Americans. The health systems in the area must deal with conditions normally seen in developing countries (e.g., malnutrition, tuberculosis, dengue fever, and cholera) and in developed countries alike (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, and cancer). In examining the strengths and weaknesses of the area's systems, the volume provides a regional health overview and assessments of health care in individual jurisdictions, evaluates the Pacific Basin Medical Officers Training Program, and lays out a strategic plan for future health services in the U.S.-Associated Pacific Basin.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKDespite the promise of competency-based education (CBE), learner-centered issues related to support, retention, and program completion rates remain problematic. In addition, the infrastructure for higher education, including issues related to faculty (intellectual property, workload, and curriculum), pose barriers and challenges in the design, development, implementation, and delivery of CBE. In response, administrators, faculty, designers, and developers of competency-based experiences must incorporate innovative strategies that are foreign to the traditional institution. A strong emphasis on retention and graduation rates must surround the student with support, starting with the design and development of the CBE system. There are few resources that can help prepare instructional designers, advisors, academic administrators, and faculty to meet the many challenges of designing, developing, implementing, and managing CBE. Career Ready Education Through Experiential Learning is an essential reference book that includes strategies for design and development of competency-based education (CBE) programs, as well as administrative and delivery strategies as examples of how CBE can be implemented. Through a strong theoretical framework, chapters present the best practices, strategies, and practical tips as examples and scenarios that can be used in higher education settings. While highlighting education courses, programs, and lessons across various institutions and educational domains, this book is ideal for higher education administrators and policy designers/implementors, instructional designers, curriculum developers, faculty, public policy leaders, students in curriculum and instruction and instructional technology programs, along with researchers and practitioners interested in CBE and experiential learning in higher education.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"For years we have known the value of assessing the delivery and effectiveness of individual clinical services and how factors such as structure, organization, and finance influence the quality and quantity of clinical care. There is a comparable field in public health called public health services and systems research (PHSSR) that studies system-level factors and their association to public health delivery and the health of populations. The current effort to update the PHSSR agenda represents a new phase in the development of the field and provides an opportunity to build on the PHSSR knowledge that has been accumulated over the last several years. This updated agenda also will help set a new direction for the continued growth and development of PHSSR. The [Robert Wood Johnson] Foundation made a specific decision to partner with the CDC in the development of this agenda and the Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support and its director, to lead this effort. In addition, a consulting firm, Altarum, was hired to facilitate sessions and provide logistic support to the effort. Likewise, the National Coordinating Center for PHSSR was asked to provide intellectual assistance to the agenda-setting endeavor. The decision was reached early on to ensure that the deliberations that resulted in the new PHSSR research agenda were, to the extent possible, informed by contemporary research and the most current developments in practice, policy, and research. To accomplish this, a series of systematic reviews was commissioned. The systematic reviews focused on major issues of concern in PHSSR and can be found in this supplement to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. In addition to the systematic reviews, Altarum completed a thorough review of the current research efforts of RWJF. The review conducted by Altarum included research that had been published as a result of the Foundation's efforts as well as current activities related to the various parts of the Foundation's PHSSR portfolio. Both sets of material were made broadly available to the participants in the research agenda-setting process, such as RWJF websites dedicated to this effort." - p. S1, S4

Parsing, also referred to as syntax analysis, has been and continues to be an essential part of computer science and linguistics. Parsing techniques have grown considerably in importance, both in computer science, ie. advanced compilers often use general CF parsers, and computational linguistics where such parsers are the only option. They are used in a variety of software products including Web browsers, interpreters in computer devices, and data compression programs; and they are used extensively in linguistics.
