This 2022, third edition of RYA European Waterways Regulation has been updated to match CEVNI 6, the new version of the code governing navigation on some of the European inland waterways. Covering subject areas such as Basic Rules, Visual Signs, Buoyage, Designated Areas, Sound Signals and more, this is the ideal book for those wanting to pass the CEVNI test, a legal requirement for those cruising the European inland waterways. Other edition updates include: • Changes to the introduction to clarify how CEVNI applies to those using European inland waterways. • Updates to terminology, lights and signage to reflect CEVNI version 6. • Regulation changes are now reflected in the text. The CEVNI code was devised by the United Nations in 1985 and governs navigation on all interconnected European inland waterways. It was established to enable boatmen of all nationalities to communicate, and to understand what is going on without the need to speak each other’s language. By law, all those cruising on European inland waterways must have passed the CEVNI test and have a reference copy onboard. Knowledgeable author Tam Murrell has been cruising since the late 1950’s, working with narrow boats and barges on UK inland waters, to small coasters trading in and around the Thames estuary and into Northern Europe. Since 1995, Tam and his wife have spent much of their time on continental waterways on their 24m Dutch barge. As the RYA’s supporting material for the CEVNI test, RYA European Waterways Regulation is the ideal book for those wanting to cruise the inland waterways of Europe. Harmonised navigation rules are essential to facilitate traffic on inland waterways and ensure safety. The European Code for Inland Waterways (CEVNI) was first established in 1962 and has since that time been maintained by the UNECE Working Party on Inland Water Transport (SC.3). It contains the core uniform rules applicable to the traffic on inland waterways, such as marking on vessels, visual signs on vessels, sound signals and radiotelephony, waterway signs and markings, rules of the road, berthing rules, signalling and reporting requirements, and prevention of pollution of water and disposal of waste. The provisions of CEVNI are traditionally based on the relevant regulations of river commissions for the Danube, Moselle, Rhine and Sava and adjusted to the pan-European scope of the code. With this fifth edition, the Working Party on Inland Water Transport and its expert group on CEVNI have taken into account best practices from the existing traffic regulations of the river commissions and UNECE member States. In particular, this revision updates several articles in relation to small craft, radiotelephony, Inland Automatic Identification System (AIS), prevention of pollution of water and an annex on safety checklist for bunkering fuel is added.
