DOWNLOAD EBOOKCEBAF has recently upgraded its accelerator control system to use EPICS, a control system toolkit being developed by a collaboration among laboratories in the US and Europe. The migration to EPICS has taken place during a year of intense commissioning activity, with new and old control systems operating concurrently. Existing CAMAC hardware was preserved by adding a CAMAC serial highway link to VME; newer hardware developments are now primarily in VME. Software is distributed among three tiers of computers: first, workstations and X terminals for operator interfaces and high level applications; second, VME single board computers for distributed access to hardware and for local control processing; third, embedded processors where needed for faster closed loop operation. This system has demonstrated the ability to scale EPICS to controlling thousands of devices, including hundreds of embedded processors, with control distributed among dozens of VME processors executing more than 125,000 EPICS database records. To deal with the large size of the control system, CEBAF has integrated an object oriented database, providing data management capabilities for both low level I/O and high level machine modeling. A new callable interface which is control system independent permits access to live EPICS data, data in other Unix processes, and data contained in the object oriented database.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe third annual International Industrialization Symposium on the SuperCollider, IISSC-held March 13-15, 1991, in Atlanta, Ga.-was an enormous success. The number of attendees, exhibitors, and representatives from foreign countries surpassed the totals of previous years. There were 740 attendees, representing more than 2 dozen universities and colleges, 32 states, 9 national labs, 6 research centers, several government entities at the local, state, and federal level, 182 businesses & industry and 14 countries. More than 100 exhibits, sponsored by 85 organizations, added to the excitement. "Getting Down to Business" was the theme of this year's Symposium. The fact that the Superconducting SuperCollider (SSC) is indeed underway was the message delivered by the Symposium's keynote speaker, Dr. Roy Schwitters, and expanded upon by the opening plenary speakers. The project is moving from the planning stage to actual construction, to development and procurement of equipment, and to resolution of the technical issues involved in advancing the state-of-the-art in areas such as theory, controls, systems, metallurgy, quality control, management, cryogenics, power systems, detectors, interagency cooperation and funding. Plenary speakers included: Paul Gilbert, Chairman of Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe International Nuclear Physics Conference, held every three years, is the most pretigeous meeting of nuclear physics. Its programme covers the whole range of nuclear physics and some application, such as relativistic nuclear collisions, mesons and baryons in nuclei, hadron structure and quarks in nuclei, formation and properties of hot nuclei, nuclear reactions at low and intermediate energy, nuclear structure, radioactive nuclear beams, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interaction and symmetries, experimental technique and new facilities, and applied nuclear physics. The proceedings is a collection of all invited talks on the plenary and parallel sessions. Presented by the leading scientists in their fields, these talks summarized the most recent progress and future prospects in all the aspects of nuclear physics.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Hyatt Regency Hotel, Columbus, Ohio was the venue for the 1995 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. The meeting was held jointly with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference. Jim Peeples, of CVI, Inc., was conference chairman. Columbus is the home of the Battelle Memorial Institute, a pioneer in cryogenic materials development; the home of CVI, Inc., and Lake Shore Cryotronics, Inc., two leading manufacturers of cryogenic equipment; and it is the home of Ohio State University, where research on liquid helium has long been conducted. The program consisted of 315 CEC papers, nearly the same number as for CEC-91. This was the second largest number of papers ever submitted to the CEC. Of these, 252 papers are published here, in Volume 41 of Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. Once again the volume is published in two books. This volume includes a number of photographs taken during the awards lunch on July 20, 1995. Photographs have often been taken during the conferences, but they have never been used. The pictures are of the awardees, the conference chairs, and the organizers. They are distributed through out the books on pages that would otherwise have been blank. The pictures can be found on the following pages: 28, 232, 334, 536, 640, 826, 990, 1032, 1202, 1462,1682,1888, and 1994.
