DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Nineteenth Century Bookbindings This process unites the sections to one another in series, one after the other, and permits the perusal of the book by the simple turning of leaf after leaf upon the hinge formed by the thread and the back of the section. A volume, or series of sections, so treated, the ends of the strings being properly secured, is essentially bound;' all that is subsequently done is done for the protection or for the decoration of the volume or of its cover. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Exhibition of Bookbindings It is impossible to determine at what date the panel stamp was introduced into England, and there are few early examples that can with any certainty be assigned to the 1sth century. The earliest example, perhaps, is to be found on a loose binding in the library of Westminster Abbey. The sides are tooled at the edges with small tools, and in the centre is a twice repeated stamp with the arms presumably of Edward IV. This binding has, however, no binder's mark. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Mosaic Bookbindings: A Catalogue of an Exhibition The following account of mosaic bindings does not pretend to trace the development of ornament as found in gold-tooled bindings, except so far as it is necessary in connection with inlaid work; nor can it hope to offer much that is new in the history of bookbinding. It attempts only, by an orderly arrangement of the few facts which are scattered through the works of various writers, to lead to an intelligent comprehension of an exhibition believed to be unique. It remains to express indebtedness and thanks to those writers, both French and English, from whose books these facts have been taken, and especially to MM. Henri Beraldi and Ernest Thoinan, Mr. H. P. Home, and Miss S. T. Prideaux. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Catalogue of Ornamental Leather Bookbindings Executed in America Prior to 1850: Exhibited at the Grolier Club, November 7 to 30, 1907 In the arrangement of the ornament on the backs of the books we find the earliest examples broken up into panels, each panel being treated separately in the obvious way of border, corner-piece and centerpiece, more or less elaborated according to the period and the style of ornament then in vogue. It is to be remarked that the titles of many of these books, following a purely American fashion, were often placed in the centers of the backs.
