The word ""Flemish"" refers to the people living in the North of Belgium and France and the South of the Netherlands. The Flemish, also called ""Flemings,"" are of Germanic (Frank) origin. When the Franks invaded what is now Belgium, they settled between the sea and the ""charcoal forest,"" a dense old-growth forest of beech and oak, which extended to the Rhine and formed a natural boundary during the Late Iron Age through Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The county of Flanders was created 864 when the French king Charles the Bald granted it as a fief to his son-in-law Baldwin with the Iron Arm. Flanders was a part of France but distinguished itself from the rest of the country with its Germanic Flemish population and close economic ties to England. Unlike other French fiefs it was never returned to the French king's control, instead Flanders became a part of the duke of Burgundy's possessions in 1384, which would evolve into present day Belgium.

This volume is a synthesis of the research articles of one of Europe’s leading scholars of 16th-century exile communities. It will be invaluable to the growing number of historians interested in the religious, intellectual, social and economic impact of stranger communities on the rapidly changing nation that was Elizabethan and early Stuart England. Southern England in general, and London in particular, played a unique part in offering refuge to Calvinist exiles for more than a century. For the English government, the attraction of exiles was not so much their Reformed religion and discipline as their economic potential - the exiles were in the main skilled craftsmen and well-connected merchants who could benefit the English economy.

Excerpt from De Luxe Illustrated Catalogue of the Very Valuable Modern Paintings, Sculpture and Other Art Property Collected by the Late Theron R. Butler, Esq., New York A characteristic example of this Dutch master of genre subjects. Seated in a rush-bottomed chair beside an empty wine-cask, on which are a bottle of spirits, a glass and a pipe, a blue-smocked countryman is teaching his dog to beg. With his hands supported on his knees he leans forward, his face wreathed in smiles, as the dog stands erect on his hind legs obedient to the word of command, and evidently as much pleased at his accomplishments as is his master. This example was painted to order for the late owner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
