Paintings by Renaissance masters Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albrecht Durer, and Hans Holbein the Younger are among the works featured in this lavish volume, the first to comprehensively study the largest collection of early German paintings in America. These works, created in the 14th through 16th centuries in the region that comprises present-day Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, include religious images - such as "Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" by Durer and the double-sided altarpiece "The Dormition of the Virgin" by Hans Schaufelein - as well as remarkable portraits by Holbein and the iconic "Judgment of Paris" by Cranach. In all, more than 70 works are thoroughly discussed and analyzed, making this volume an incomparable resource for the study of this rich artistic period.

The title of the first temporary exhibition opened in the new building of the Museum of Ethnography refers to the former temporary headquarters of the institution and the experience of arrival. In the past ten years, the presented artefacts have come into focus in connection with museum background work, restoration, material testing, and research. A significant part of them rarely or never left the warehouse, but in the temporary exhibition celebrating the move to a new home, they are included together with the museum’s most popular pieces. The material is organized around twenty ethnographic/anthropological and museological concepts, a few key concepts of the discipline, comparing distant objects in space and time. The summary texts speak in the voice of the curators: they provide a subjective interpretation and an explanation of the classification. The object inscriptions combine the historical traditions and new viewpoints of the examination of material culture, also revealing the workshop secrets of the invisible, multi-actor museum work. Detailed object histories, research background, individual interest, method and style – a variety of contexts drawn by thirty museologists. The previous stages of the institution’s 150-year history are flashed by a selection compiled from archival footage: all the locations where the ever-growing collection was kept, researched and presented. Apart from the photos, we can get to know the new buildings, the storage center that houses the collection and the main building that ensures the operation of the museum with the help of the designers’ thoughts and drawings. The catalog follows the structure and concept of the exhibition, inviting a new approach to ethnographic objects. It evokes the atmosphere of the exhibition space, reproduces its contents, and its freshly taken photos of objects often allow us to see more: they show the many fine details of the objects up close, the different possibilities and methods of processing and decorating wood, metal, textiles, ceramics, and paper. The photographs and texts not only convey knowledge about traditional cultures, but also convey the expanding perception of the ethnographic object and ethnographic research. Museum and Gallery Publishing examines the theory and practice of general and scholarly publishing associated with museum and art gallery collections. Focusing on the production and reception of these texts, the book explains the relevance of publishing to the cultural, commercial and social contexts of collections and their institutions. Combining theory with case studies from around the world, Sarah Anne Hughes explores how, why and to what effect museums and galleries publish books. Covering a broad range of publishing formats and organisations, including heritage sites, libraries and temporary exhibitions, the book argues that the production and consumption of printed media within the context of collecting institutions occupies a unique and privileged role in the creation and communication of knowledge. Acknowledging that books offer functions beyond communication, Hughes argues that this places books published by museums in a unique relationship to institutions, with staff acting as producers and visitors as consumers. The logistical and ethical dimensions of museum and gallery publishing are also examined in depth, including consideration of issues such as production, the impact of digital technologies, funding and sponsorship, marketing, co-publishing, rights, and curators’ and artists’ agency. Focusing on an important but hitherto neglected topic, Museum and Gallery Publishing is key reading for researchers in the fields of museum, heritage, art and publishing studies. It will also be of interest to curators and other practitioners working in museums, heritage and science centres and art galleries.
