DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis document provides a guide on how to properly store and care for magnetic media to maximize their life expectancies. An introduction compares magnetic media to paper and film and outlines the scope of the report. The second section discusses things that can go wrong with magnetic media. Binder degradation, magnetic particle instabilities, substrate deformation, magnetic tape recorders; and format issues are highlighted in this section. The third and fourth sections cover preventing information loss with multiple tape copies, costs, and how long magnetic media will last. In the fifth section, care and handling, storage conditions and standards, and refreshing of tapes are described for preventing magnetic tape from degrading prematurely. An appendix provides the Ampex Guide to the Care and Handling of Magnetic Tape, an estimation of life expectancies, sources for further reading, resources for transfer and restoration of video and audio tape, and a glossary. DOWNLOAD EBOOKWhen I started in magnetic recording nearly fifty years ago, it was easy to perceive the common sense of it. There was very little mathematics and every new finding was a source of wonder. I have tried to recapture this spirit with simple explanations, while maintaining a high density of infonnation and cov ering the entire field. This book introduces a novice to magnetic recording and its many branches. It includes reference data for designers and users. Each chapter stands by itself; no prerequisites are essential. For a quick survey, the equations and worked out examples can be disregarded. The magnetic recording art is changing so rapidly that new advances are announced almost every month. These are properly covered by journal articles and manufacturers' catalogs. This book will fulfil its purpose if it gives a back ground for easily comprehending the new advances. I have included subjects and devices not found elsewhere, and some unconventional viewpoints. I would welcome comments from readers. To Jay McKnight I am deeply grateful for important suggestions and helpful comments. I appreciate also the help of BASF, John Boyers, Joseph Dundovic, Charles Ginsburg, Peter Hammar, Yasuo Imaoka, Hal Kaitchuk, Otto Kornei, Harold Miller, Jack Mullin, Jim Novak, Lenard Perlman, Carl Powell, Sidney Rubens, John Shennan, Shigeo Shima, Heinz Thiele, Yoshimi Watanabe and many others; and to my daughter Ruth for typing.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKManaging Information Risks: Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Responses identifies and categorizes risks related to creation, collection, storage, retention, retrieval, disclosure and ownership of information in organizations of all types and sizes. It is intended for risk managers, information governance specialists, compliance officers, attorneys, records managers, archivists, and other decision-makers, managers, and analysts who are responsible for risk management initiatives related to their organizations’ information assets. An opening chapter defines and discusses risk terminology and concepts that are essential for understanding, assessing, and controlling information risk. Subsequent chapters provide detailed explanations of specific threats to an organization’s information assets, an assessment of vulnerabilities that the threats can exploit, and a review of available options to address the threats and their associated vulnerabilities. Applicable laws, regulations, and standards are cited at appropriate points in the text. Each chapter includes extensive endnotes that support specific points and provide suggestions for further reading. While the book is grounded in scholarship, the treatment is practical rather than theoretical. Each chapter focuses on knowledge and recommendations that readers can use to: heighten risk awareness within their organizations, identify threats and their associated consequences, assess vulnerabilities, evaluate risk mitigation options, define risk-related responsibilities, and align information-related initiatives and activities with their organizations’ risk management strategies and policies. Compared to other works, this book deals with a broader range of information risks and draws on ideas from a greater variety of disciplines, including business process management, law, financial analysis, records management, information science, and archival administration. Most books on this topic associate information risk with digital data, information technology, and cyber security. This book covers risks to information of any type in any format, including paper and photographic records as well as digital content.
