For 13-year-old Cairns high school student, Willy Williams, life is not going smoothly. He has developed a passionate interest in girls, particularly the beautiful and mysterious Petra. But Willy is also bedevilled by temptation and is torn between his desire for Petra, admiration for red-head Barbara, and hopeful lust for Marjorie, his best friend’s sister. Worse, Willy has a secret enemy who makes his life a misery, as do the school bullies who pick on him at every opportunity. Complicating matters, his own poor choices do not help. Were the makeshift rockets and drone really good ideas? Willy is also fascinated in all things that fly and is an avid model aircraft hobbyist. As a First-Year member of the Australian Air Force Cadets, his dream is to one day become a pilot in the RAAF. But even as an Air Cadet he has enemies and challenges. But when a major crisis happens, his skills at piloting radio-controlled model aircraft is vital. Will his model of the Red Baron’s triplane bring him rewards or end his cadet career in disgrace?

Does class rank really matter? Q: What do you call the person who’s last in their class in medical or law school? A: Doctor or Lawyer. Q: And, what do you call the person who’s last in their class at West Point, Annapolis or the U.S. Air Force Academy? A: Lieutenant or Ensign. Same Date of Rank salutes 17 men and three women grads at the top and bottom, representing the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. They range from the “goat” or last man in West Point’s Class of 1942, who was the fi rst man in his class promoted to Brigadier General, to a 1999 Annapolis All-American rugby player who has served three tours in Iraq as a Marine Corps Captain. Read about combat leaders, admirals, astronauts, pilots, ship captains, business leaders, an historian, logistics expert, mayor, teacher and software guru. The book also provides class ranks of many famous academy grads from George Pickett and George Armstrong Custer (lasts) to Robert E. Lee and Douglas Mac Arthur (2nd and 1st) as well as Dwight Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, John McCain, and Jim Webb plus athletes like Roger Staubach of the NFL and David Robinson of the NBA. And, it includes timely information about how to apply to each of the three academies.

This story was written as one of a series of books covering some familiar professions intended to entertain, as well as inform. It was a glorious opportunity for the new author to write about his most unusual choice of a career and life after school, whilst others were going for the traditional professions of Law, Medicine, and Engineering. The Story starts with the main Character, Ola, just about to end his school days at the Prince of Wales School, and applying for a Cadetship at the Royal Air force College, Cranwell in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. Even for the British candidates, that training leading to a Commission in the Royal Air Force was only available to a select few, and so this was bound to be dealing with the mainly unknown. Soon after his acceptance by a local Selection Board, Ola embarks on a series of personal experiences that took him overseas to Europe for the first time, and a life in a Temperate country with quite different customs, and weather. He has little time to adjust to his new way of life, and to attend a proper Selection Board before arriving at the College to start his training, and life as a Flight Cadet that would last over a period of three years. The reader is made to feel every bit of this military and exciting journey involving so many special programmes that would turn those young men into fully trained pilot officers on Passing Out. The jewel in the story is, of course, Olas experiences in the air whilst flying in trainer aircraft or in gliders, and this together with the adventure, comradeship, and achievements gained through discipline, and determination would leave any young reader wanting more. Ironically, Winston ends his career working with the young cadets in the Air Training Corps who would undoubtedly find this riveting reading.

Women's integration into the military academies afforded an almost unique opportunity to study social change. It was a tidy, well-defined natural experiment. The Air Force Academy was willing to permit the kind of external scrutiny that afforded an objective account of the facts of the first year of integration. For sixteen months the academy allowed the author to interview freely and repeatedly all persons concerned with planning and implementing women's admission. Working as a historian (with individuals and documents rather than with questionnaires), Stiehm tells the report of this first year as fully and as accurately as possible.
