While growing up in Brooklyn, Abby November’s grandmother, Bubbe, always told her, “You’ll miss me when I’m a candle.” Soon, it became evident that Bubbe’s uncanny wit was genetic as November transformed into a kid who loved creating amusing repartees. In a collection of personal essays, prose, poetry, and recipes, November shares insight into her life experiences and relationships while being raised in a multi-generational home in Brooklyn, New York, with her parental grandparents, Bubbe and Zayde, whose zest for life, liverwurst sandwiches, an egg cream at Crazy Joe’s candy shop, and sitting on the stoop naming constellations became an integral part of November’s upbringing. While November’s writings detail how she eventually left to attend an internship program in Boston, married and had two children, earned three degrees, and became a stand-up comedian, they also shine a light on how the wisdom of her elder family members became a north star for her to follow through her adult life. Tales of a Bubbe is a collection of personal essays, prose, poetry, and recipes shared from the heart and mind of a woman reflecting on love, laughter, and wonderful memories.

Cara Segal is a born worrier. She figures her worrying works like a whisper in God's ear - if Cara's concerned about car crashes, kidnappings, or murders, she lets God know, and he always spares her. But Cara never thought to worry about a fire. And one night while she's sleeping at a friend's house, her house catches fire, and her mother and younger sister are both killed. Throughout shiva, the initial Jewish mourning period, Cara can't help wondering about God's role in the tragedy. And what is her father's role in her life now? He walks around like a ghost and refuses to talk about the fire. Cara longs for her family and her home, where sweet smells filled the house as Cara's mom filled orders for her catering business, Julia's Kitchen. Then one day a call comes in for a cookie order, and Cara gets a wild idea. Maybe by bringing back Julia's Kitchen, she can find a way to reconnect with everything she's lost. Complete with a glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms and a recipe for chocolate chip cookies, this debut novel is a joyous tribute to the resiliency of the human spirit. Julia's Kitchen is a 2007 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

Molly Greenberg, was born on December 22, 1924, in an Eastern European Jewish shtetl called Skala Podolska in Poland. An orphan by age three, she was raised in poverty by five older siblings. Her world was shattered on September 17, 1939, when the Soviet army seized control of Skala. This was the beginning of the end of a flourishing Jewish community. By the end of July 1942, the German military was in control of the area. Molly survived by pretending she was Mary, a non-Jew. She lived in constant fear of discovery and extermination. By the end of World War II, only one hundred and fifty out of two thousand Skala Jews survived. Molly married another survivor. In January 1949, following a few years in a displaced persons camp (where a daughter was born), they came to America to start a new life. In December 1950, another daughter was born. Growing up in Brooklyn, her children were only told that the Nazis murdered their fathers father, his sister, and their mothers entire family. This part of Mollys life was off limitstoo painful to talk about. When she entered her sixties, during a senior writing class, Molly finally faced her painful past. This book is about her life, in her own words. Her ability to survive and thrive serves as an inspiration to us all. The stories were found in a long-forgotten case, hence the title, Secrets in the Suitcase.

For anyone who has suffered loss, or is facing a personal trial, the pain can be overwhelming, and you might feel at a loss as to where to look for healing. From a young age I have wondered about the day that I will die and what my life will have meant. At the age of twenty-two, I was confronted by death in the form of cancer, and then again at age thirty-three in the form of heart disease. Those events helped clarify for me what direction my life should take, but only with the help of other people, my angels in the shadow of death. They helped show me the light when all I saw was darkness. And now I try to be an angel myself, to help those who feel like they are living in death's dark shadow. We should never have to suffer alone. This is the story of my journey from illness to health, from darkness to light, and I hope that it brings healing and light to all who read it.
