This book is full of poetry relating to the mental illness Borderline personality disorder (BPD). Such education and awareness is still needed. It is such a rollercoaster and difficult to understand. My hope is this connects to those with the same disorder, and touches the ones that do not, that they may feel or understand BPD a little more.

[This] is me offering hope, if that is what is needed, whether you suffer from borderline personality disorder or care for someone who does. It is me making an effort to raise awareness of this very misunderstood mental illness. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often considered difficult, if not impossible to treat by medical professionals. This can make the situation seem hopeless to those who are diagnosed with BPD. Based on her own experience of living with BPD, Tracy Barker shares how she has learned to manage the condition and live a full life. With poetry used to capture her lowest moments, this book gives an unfiltered look into life with BPD. Tracy shares how she has gone from being in full-time therapy to happily married, offering hope to those living with BPD, and providing awareness of the condition to their families and friends.

Poetry. Memoir. Born from the isolation of rural Pennsylvania, a life of homeschooling, and physiological and physical domestic abuse, Kayleb Rae Candrilli's memoir in verse, WHAT RUNS OVER, demands attention. Unfurling and unrelenting in its delivery, Candrilli has painted "the mountain" in excruciating detail. They show readers a world of canned peaches, of Borax cured bear hides, of urine filled Gatorade bottles, of the syringe and all the syringe may carry. They show a world of violence and its many personas. WHAT RUNS OVER, too, is a story of rural queerness, of a transgender boy almost lost to the forest forever. "When Roethke said 'energy is the soul of poetry,' he might have been anticipating a book like WHAT RUNS OVER, which is so full of energy it practically vibrates in your hand. Here, Candrilli's speaker sticks their tongue 'into the heads / of venus fly traps just to feel the bite,' then later, burns holy books in the backyard and rolls around in the ashes until they become 'a painted god.' This is the verve of an urgent new poetic voice announcing itself to the world. As Candrilli writes: 'This is what I look like / when I'm trying to save myself.'"--Kaveh Akbar

DescriptionIsla's book is in essence a poetry book about the things that matter in her life, e.g. animals and the fight with her mental illness. At the end of the book 3 short stories of the author's experience with her animals are included. The speciality is the story of a seagull's experience with Isla. About the AuthorIsla Demuth was born in Germany, 1970. At the age of 5 years old, she and her younger brother were taken in to care. The authorities took this step due to the mental state of Isla's mother, who was also very abusive. In Burg Seinsfeld Isla and her brother stayed until their father's suicide in 1980. Two years at home with her mother followed, which resulted in lots of physical and mental abuse for the children. The authorities stepped in yet again and both children were taken in to care. Isla stayed in care until the age of 20. She then lived in a family home and did a 3 year apprenticeship in merchandise. The apprenticeship went well despite frequently running away from her orderly life, and living rough for short periods of time. This was a habit acquired in the care-homes and did not stop in adulthood. At the age of 23, Isla ran away again, and leaving Germany behind came to Britain. Here she found for a while a home with a religious community. A suicide attempt, of which there have been many since her father's death, made life at the community impossible. Soon Isla became even more unwell and turned to arson. Prison in Broadmoor followed. In 2003 Isla was deemed fit for a medium secure setting where she stayed until 2007. A year in the community, followed by a rapid mental decline in a Gloucester care home. Isla is at present back in hospital where she recovers from a psychosis and is treated for her Borderline Personality Disorder.
