Early in the 21 Century, the Tyrell Corporation advanced Robot evolution to the Nexus phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a Replicant. Replicants were used Off-World as slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and colonization of other planets. Replicants who escaped and returned to Earth were hunted by special police squads – Blade Runner Units – with orders to kill any trespassing Replicant upon detection. In 2022, radical elements with the Replicant Underground detonate an EMP device over Los Angeles, destroying Tyrell Corporation’s Nexus databases, and making it easier for escaped Replicants to resettle on Earth. Soon, all Replicants are banned and the Tyrell Corporation declares bankruptcy. In 2027, Aahna ‘Ash’ Ashina, a former Blade Runner rejoined the department to hunt down fugitive Replicants. Her superiors are unaware that her loyalties are divided.
In 2019, the Blade Runner known as Aahna ‘Ash’ Ashina rescued Cleo Selwyn, daughter of business tycoon Alexandra Selwyn, from a plot to give the girl to the Tyrell corporation for genetic experimentation. Ash and Cleo escaped Los Angeles and disappeared. Now, seven years later and living under assumed identities, Ash and Cleo have resurfaced on one of the Off-world mining colonies. But Cleo’s father has never stopped looking for them, sending out dozens of bounty hunters and search parties to kill Ash and bring his daughter home. Now, following a bloody Replicant mutiny, Ash and Cleo have become separated and a ruthless new Blade Runner called Hythe has Ash dead in her sights. Collects Blade Runner 2019 #5-8. “10 out of 10. Blade Runner 2049 is a 2017 sequel to the 1982 movie Blade Runner, about a world in which some human-looking replicants have become dangerous, so that other human-looking replicants, as well as humans, have the job of hunting down the dangerous models and “retiring” (destroying) them. Both films have been widely hailed as among the greatest science-fiction movies of all time, and Ridley Scott, director of the original Blade Runner, has announced that there will be a third Blade Runner movie. Blade Runner 2049 and Philosophy is a collection of entertaining articles on both Blade Runner movies (and on the spin-off short films and Blade Runner novels) by twenty philosophers representing diverse backgrounds and philosophical perspectives. Among the issues addressed in the book: What does Blade Runner 2049 tell us about the interactions of state power and corporate power? Can machines ever become truly conscious, or will they always lack some essential human qualities? The most popular theory of personhood says that a person is defined by their memories, so what happens when memories can be manufactured and inserted at will? We already interact with non-human decision-makers via the Internet. When embodied AI becomes reality, how can we know what is human and what is simulation? Does it matter? Do AI-endowed human-looking replicants have civil and political rights, or can they be destroyed whenever “real” humans decide they are inconvenient? The blade runner Deckard (Harrison Ford) appears in both movies, and is generally assumed to be human, but some claim he may be a replicant. What’s the evidence on both sides? Is Niander Wallace (the-mad-scientist-cum-evil-corporate-CEO in Blade Runner 2049) himself a replicant? What motivates him? What are the impacts of decision-making AI entities on the world of business? Both Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 have been praised for their hauntingly beautiful depictions of a bleak future, but the two futures are very different (and the 2019 future imagined in the original Blade Runner is considerably different from the actual world of 2019). How have our expectations and visions of the future changed between the two movies? The “dream maker” character Ana Stelline in Blade Runner 2049 has a small but pivotal role. What are the implications of a person whose dedicated mission and task is to invent and install false memories? What are the social and psychological implications of human-AI sexual relations?

Blade Runner Aahna ‘Ash’ Ashina of the Los Angeles Police Department has been assigned to investigate the disappearance of Isobel and Cleo Selwyn, the wife and daughter of business tycoon, Alexandra Selwyn. Using data retrieved from Isobel’s abandoned Spinner, Ash followed Isobel’s trail and found herself confronting a replicant who had genetically ‘aged himself up’ as an old man to avoid detection. Ash shot and wounded him after he attacked her, but he was still able to escape, telling Ash, as he fled, to: “Ask Alexander Selwyn why he wants his daughter dead.” Meanwhile, Isobel and Cleo have made contact with an underworld community that lives beneath the streets of Los Angeles and its leader, Malik, who also runs an underground railway that helps Replicants to escape. After Ash reported back to Selwyn on the progress of her investigation, her own Spinner was attacked in mid-air by another craft, which sent her crashing and burning towards the streets of the city below…
After 20 years living Off-world. Cleo Selwyn has returned to Los Angeles in search for her surrogate Replicant mother Isobel, whom Cleo believes has been abducted on the orders of Niander Wallace. Believing that Cleo’s DNA holds the secret of Replicant fertility, Wallace has ordered his own personal Replicant assistant, Luv, the first Replicant Blade Runner, to hunt her down with approval to kill any who stand in her way. Now reunited with her one-time protector and former Blade Runner Aahna ‘Ash’ Ashina, Cleo and Ash set off on a desperate race to find her mother and escape back Off-world before Luv can find them. “As a Blade Runner series this looks to be one of the best yet. If this is the final chapter, we are in for an explosive end. My anticipation levels are at an all-time high.” – Get Your Comic On Collects Blade Runner 2039 #5-9
