DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book was written to make the material presented in my book, Stahlbetonbrucken, accessible to a larger number of engineers throughout the world. A work in English, the logical choice for this task, had been contemplated as Stahlbetonbrucken was still in its earliest stages of preparation. The early success of Stahlbetonbrucken provided significant impetus for the writing of Prestressed Concrete Bridges, which began soon after the publication of its predecessor. The present work is more than a mere translation of Stahlbetonbrucken. Errors in Stahlbetonbrucken that were detected after publication have been corrected. New material on the relation between cracking in concrete and corrosion of reinforce ment, prestressing with unbonded tendons, skew-girder bridges, and cable-stayed bridges has been added. Most importantly, however, the presentation of the material has been extensively reworked to improve clarity and consistency. Prestressed Concrete Bridges can thus be regarded as a thoroughly new and improved edition of its predecessor.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe use of concrete sleepers in railways started in the 1940s. They are currently used in many countries thoughout the world at a rate of over 12 million per year. This report discusses the various types of sleeper which have been developed - monoblock, two-block, reinforced and prestressed concrete. Separate sections deal with design, rail fastening systems, manufacture, quality control and testing, installation and performance, and research and development.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAddressed to designers and even more so to owners and project managers, this part is meant as a guide to an efficient selection of designers and contractors, and to the preparation of fair contracts providing high quality at reasonable cost. Clearly, a good design must be paid for at its real cost; economising on the design cost can be extremely counterproductive for the owner when considering the final whole-life cost of the project. In addition, it was considered very important to address the designer’s responsibilities and relations with other participants in large projects, and finally design philosophy itself. Part 2 – Design and construction aspects This more technical part is mainly addressed to bridge designers and devoted to a systematic analysis of structural and constructional bridge concepts. Considering the importance of erection techniques in the development of bridge design, this second part of the guide starts by a description of the different construction methods, their advantages and draw-backs, their particularities and, of course, by defining the domain of their most efficient applications. Another main chapter is devoted to the proper design of cross-sections. And finally, a third main chapter deals in detail with the influence of construction techniques on design.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis textbook covers the very wide spectrum of all aspects of railway engineering for all engineering disciplines, in a 'broad brush' way giving a good overall knowledge of what is involved in planning, designing, constructing and maintaining a railway. It covers all types of railway systems including light rail and metro as well as main line. The first edition has proved very popular both with students new to railways and with practicing engineers who need to work in this newly expanding area.In the second edition, the illustrations have been improved and brought up to date, particularly with the introduction of 30 colour pages which include many newly taken photographs. The text has been reviewed for present day accuracy and, where necessary, has been modified or expanded to include reference to recent trends or developments. New topics include automatic train control, level crossings, dot matrix indicators, measures for the mobility impaired, reinforced earth structures, air conditioning, etc. Recent railway experience, both technical and political, has also been reflected in the commentary.
