Abuse, trauma, racism, and being othered--Pricelis Perreaux-Dominguez unfortunately has experienced it all within the church. And yet, she maintains a deep love for the body of Christ and a strong desire to see God's vision for the church flourish. In Being a Sanctuary, she offers a hopeful path forward. Perreaux-Dominguez focuses on three aspects of God's vision for the church: that it would be sacred (biblically based), soft (trauma-informed), and safe (justice-centered). Each section of the book explores what these mean for the church using biblical teaching, practical instruction, and stories from her own experiences. She unpacks practical steps the body of Christ can take to realize this vision and cultivate a lifestyle of being a sanctuary, including repentance, sanctification, showing Christ's compassion, healing injustices, and being advocates. Be ready to take the first step to guide the church back to its foundational call to be a sacred, soft, and safe place for all people--and discover how to live in the radical way of Jesus.

The pseudonymous works Kierkegaard wrote during the period 1843–46 have been responsible for establishing his reputation as an important philosophical thinker, but for Kierkegaard himself, they were merely preparatory for what he saw as the primary task of his authorship: to elucidate the meaning of what it is to live as a Christian and thus to show his readers how they could become truly Christian. The more overtly religious and specifically Christian works Kierkegaard produced in the period 1847–51 were devoted to this task. In this book Sylvia Walsh focuses on the writings of this later period and locates the key to Kierkegaard’s understanding of Christianity in the “inverse dialectic” that is involved in “living Christianly.” In the book’s four main chapters, Walsh examines in detail how this inverse dialectic operates in the complementary relationship of the negative qualifications of Christian existence—sin, the possibility of offense, self-denial, and suffering—to the positive qualifications—faith, forgiveness, new life/love/hope, and joy and consolation. It was Kierkegaard’s aim, she argues, “to bring the negative qualifications, which he believed had been virtually eliminated in Christendom, once again into view, to provide them with conceptual clarity, and to show their essential relation to, and necessity in, securing a correct understanding and expression of the positive qualifications of Christian existence.”

The backstory of finding Elizabeth Smart and how growing up in the Mormon culture pushed the author to develop the exact kind of intuition that was needed to help manage Elizabeth’s kidnapping and rescue while the world watched. Chris Thomas is not yet thirty years old when he finds himself managing the immense pressure, eccentric personalities, and extenuating circumstances of an international story, where one small misstep could adversely impact the search for a missing teenager and the reputation of her family. Now, twenty years later, Thomas takes readers behind the scenes, providing new details, perspectives, and commentary on finding Elizabeth Smart. In the process of reflecting on Elizabeth’s search and rescue, Thomas discovers how growing up in the culture of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly known as Mormon) helped push him to develop the exact kind of intuition needed to manage Elizabeth’s kidnapping and rescue, and to do so while the world watched. Unexpected juxtaposes crucial events from the Smart case with Thomas’s experience growing up in the Latter-day Saint culture, including coming to understand the secret of a broken war hero before it was too late.

Placing Kierkegaard squarely within the current of contemporary continental philosophy, The New Kierkegaard reveals intriguing insights into the philosopher's work and thinking. By reading Kierkegaard deconstructively, the 13 lively essays in this volume seek a deeper understanding of his work in philosophy, religion, and aesthetics. These readings explore the breadth of Kierkegaard's thought and unfold the richness of his views on the human condition. Consideration of a broad range of themes--from irony and madness to love and experience--and texts--Either/Or, Philosophical Fragments, Works of Love, and Fear and Trembling--emphasizes the ambiguities, dialectical tensions, and open-endedness of Kierkegaard's philosophical writings. These innovative and original commentaries give Kierkegaard a fresh look and bring him into present-day discussions and debates in continental philosophy. Contributors are Jacob Bøggild, John D. Caputo, Mark Dooley, Joakim Garff, Robert Gibbs, Elsebet Jegstrup, Richard Kearney, John Llewelyn, Roger Poole, Vanessa Rumble, John Vignaux Smyth, Jason Wirth, and David Wood.

A News Story tells of the time when TV news switched from being a money-losing public service to a highly successful money machine. Mitch Bellows and Anthony Hadde are news directors who provide a contrast in approach: Bellows is dedicated to truth and integrity-Hadde is motivated by power and greed. Ambition also drives some anchormen to achieve their goals, often at the expense of their core values. Others hold fast to high standards. It is impossible to tell which ones have integrity by watching them on the screen. Only by examining their off-camera behavior can the truth be uncovered. A News Story offers a revealing look behind the microphones and cameras of a TV news operation. The author has drawn on his own experiences while working in that industry, but it is not a roman à clef, even if some of the characters seem to be recognizable. A News Story is a fast-moving page-turner that pulls no punches as it delves into the lives of its characters.
