PROLOGUE Accused of using his well-known import/export company as a front for an illegal smuggling operation, Halston Wellington, II was not only faced with losing his three-generation business, he was faced with losing his freedom … and something even more valuable, he realizes upon meeting international criminal attorney Candace Younger. *** “And what is that Halston? What do you want?” Candace asked, her light-brown gaze holding his steamy emerald one. Was the candlelight playing tricks, or did the color of his eyes change with his emotions – like that mood ring she remembered getting as a retro holiday gift as a child? “Even though I asked you first, I will answer first,” he said. “Would it surprise you to know that I want a family? … Would it surprise you to know that what I want most of all Candace, is you?” *** Lying under him, Candace curved her body into his. "Mmm," she cooed as her palms glided along the smoothness of his shoulders and back. "Adios mio you're so beautiful," he whispered into the curve of her neck. "I want you so very much." Candace closed her eyes, silently begging him for the ultimate joining of their bodies. *** They could have had it all ... if only he hadn't betrayed her, she thought. And the part that hurt the most was -- he’d planned his betrayal from day one. And oh how expertly he’d carried it out. He'd played her like a violin, Shakespearean-like language and all: “I was destined for thee, as you were for me. Maybe, just maybe, we were destined to be.” It was so real. How could it all have been such a lie? *** Candace found solace in her work, especially after losing her beloved boyfriend Tom to cancer three years ago. She’d slowly dipped her toes back into the dating pool, but hadn’t come close to clicking with anyone until she met the magnetic Halston Wellington, II. Worldly, intelligent, successful and intimidatingly handsome – he was everything a woman could want in a man. It didn’t make sense that he was single … until she discovers the real reason for his interest in her. He was right, they were destined to be, but was it for love, or was he using her for something much more nefarious? ### Relevant Search Terms: interracial romance, bwwm romance, multicultural romance, african american romance, steamy romance, short story romance, womens fiction, black love

Maybe it’s the end of the world, but not for Candace Chen, a millennial, first-generation American and office drone meandering her way into adulthood in Ling Ma’s offbeat, wryly funny, apocalyptic satire, Severance. "A stunning, audacious book with a fresh take on both office politics and what the apocalypse might bring." —Michael Schaub, NPR.org “A satirical spin on the end times-- kind of like The Office meets The Leftovers.” --Estelle Tang, Elle NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY: NPR * The New Yorker ("Books We Loved") * Elle * Marie Claire * Amazon Editors * The Paris Review (Staff Favorites) * Refinery29 * Bustle * Buzzfeed * BookPage * Bookish * Mental Floss * Chicago Review of Books * HuffPost * Electric Literature * A.V. With the recent passing of her Chinese immigrant parents, she’s had her fill of uncertainty. She’s content just to carry on: She goes to work, troubleshoots the teen-targeted Gemstone Bible, watches movies in a Greenpoint basement with her boyfriend. So Candace barely notices when a plague of biblical proportions sweeps New York. Then Shen Fever spreads. Families flee. Companies cease operations. The subways screech to a halt. Her bosses enlist her as part of a dwindling skeleton crew with a big end-date payoff. Soon entirely alone, still unfevered, she photographs the eerie, abandoned city as the anonymous blogger NY Ghost. Candace won’t be able to make it on her own forever, though. Enter a group of survivors, led by the power-hungry IT tech Bob. They’re traveling to a place called the Facility, where, Bob promises, they will have everything they need to start society anew. But Candace is carrying a secret she knows Bob will exploit. Should she escape from her rescuers? A send-up and takedown of the rituals, routines, and missed opportunities of contemporary life, Ling Ma’s Severance is a moving family story, a quirky coming-of-adulthood tale, and a hilarious, deadpan satire. Most important, it’s a heartfelt tribute to the connections that drive us to do more than survive.

In Feels Right Kemi Adeyemi presents an ethnography of how black queer women in Chicago use dance to assert their physical and affective rights to the city. Adeyemi stages the book in queer dance parties in gentrifying neighborhoods, where good feelings are good business. But feeling good is elusive for black queer women whose nightlives are undercut by white people, heterosexuality, neoliberal capitalism, burnout, and other buzzkills. Adeyemi documents how black queer women respond to these conditions: how they destroy DJ booths, argue with one another, dance slowly, and stop partying altogether. Their practices complicate our expectations that life at night, on the queer dance floor, or among black queer community simply feels good. Adeyemi’s framework of “feeling right” instead offers a closer, kinesthetic look at how black queer women adroitly manage feeling itself as a complex right they should be afforded in cities that violently structure their movements and energies. What emerges in Feels Right is a sensorial portrait of the critical, black queer geographies and collectivities that emerge in social dance settings and in the broader neoliberal city.
