The Battle of Point Pleasant is considered to be the first battle of the American Revolution. It was part of Lord Dunmore's expedition (or war) in 1774, which was to subdue the Indians on the frontier. The battle was fought and won by men under the command of General Lewis against an Indian attack. The effect of this battle was that the Indians along Virginia's (or West Virginia's) borders kept the peace during the Revolution and gave experience to many men who joined the colonial forces.

This publication covers the epic Battle of Point Pleasant, contains an extensive roster and includes over 100 biographical sketches of the men who participated in the battle. The author, Livia Nye Simpson-Poffenbarger, was a newspaper publisher, activist and founder of a chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Despite criticism from some historians that the Battle of Point Pleasant was the last in the colonial frontier wars, the author created a campaign for Point Pleasant that, ultimately, led to the establishment of the Tu-Endie-Wei State Park and the erection of the monument at the battle site. Her efforts also secured a resolution from Congress, which officially named Point Pleasant as the first battle of the Revolutionary War.

The land was called "Virginia" by Sir Walter Raleigh. A region of natural beauty, governed by temperamental weather, the western slopes of the Alleghenies beckoned a sturdy stock of early hunters, explorers, and settlers. This is the story of how those early residents forged a home, a nation, and finally, a state, along these rocky slopes.
