The Australian Journal of French Studies was first issued by the Monash University department of Modern Lanuages in 1964, as a medium for publication of research on the history and criticism of French literature. Its publication was funded by grants from private firms and support from Monash and the University of Melbourne. From 1971-77 the journal was owned, edited and published jointly by the two universities, since then by Monash alone. Editors of the journal whose correspondence is included here are Professors Roger Laufer (1964-1967), Ivan Barko (1968), and Wallace Kirsop (1968-2000). .
