""The value of this book cannot be overstated. As a student, many years ago, there were no comprehensive textbooks on sheep medicine, so I was lucky to have Professor Abbott as an inspiring lecturer. This book is needed by students!" Following on from his first book, Sheep Veterinary Practice remains the ideal reference for veterinarians in farm animal practice, veterinary and animal science students, agriculturalists, and sheep producers. Principally addressing sheep health, welfare, and production matters in Australia, it covers issues and clinical practice of relevance in many countries of the world where sheep are raised. Sheep veterinary specialist Professor Kym Abbott informs the reader of the science underpinning the occurrence of disease syndromes, giving special attention to commonly investigated problems related to nutrition, reproduction, and helminth diseases. Other disease conditions of sheep are discussed in subsequent chapters; first on the basis of presenting signs in the case of lameness and sudden death - conditions in which signs can be attributed to disorders of a variety of body systems - and then on a body-systems basis. This new edition thoroughly revises and expands on the previous text, adding a review of the systems and strategies available to improve the welfare of sheep in extensive farming systems, a chapter on pain relief, analgesia and anaesthesia for sheep, and a chapter on metacestodes. The text is illustrated with more than 150 full-colour images and photographs"--

Ruminants contribute significantly to human food security. However, the production of ruminants contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are responsible for climate change. GHGs such as methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide are produced from different processes of ruminant production. Ruminant enteric methane is a substantial component of methane produced by agriculture. This book presents novel and established methods in quantifying and reducing enteric methane emission from ruminants in different production systems. The book covers different types of ruminants including cattle, sheep, and goats. The chapters are contributed by scientists and authors from different parts of the world, demonstrating the importance of this problem and the universal drive for immediate and sustainable solutions. Although, biologically speaking, the production of enteric methane cannot be reduced to zero, high emissions are an indicator of inefficient digestion of feed in the rumen and low utilisation of feed energy. By presenting research that could lead to robust and yet practical quantification methods and mitigation strategies, this book not only contributes to the discourse and new knowledge on the magnitude of the problem but also brings forward potential solutions in different livestock production systems.

Assessing Site Significance is an invaluable resource for archaeologists and others who need guidance in determining whether sites are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Because the register's eligibility criteria were largely developed for standing sites, it is difficult to know in any particular case whether a site known primarily through archaeological work has sufficient 'historical significance' to be listed. Hardesty and Little address these challenges, describing how to file for NRHP eligibility and how to determine the historical significance of archaeological properties. This second edition brings everything up to date, and includes new material on 17th- and 18th-century sites, traditional cultural properties, shipwrecks, Japanese internment camps, and military properties.
