This survey gathered updated travel behavior data from transit users in the Atlanta area. A survey instrument was developed to be administered as an in-person interview using tablet PC¿s and printed surveys, to gather information that will support regional transportation planning needs. The data gathered will be used to recalibrate Atlanta Regional Commission¿s mode choice model. The data will also be shared with regional transit operators to help them gain a better understanding of how their services are being used. The purpose is to document training practices at a sampling of transit agencies concerning the application and repair of advanced on-board electronics so that key personnel have the knowledge needed to make informed decisions. The objectives of the synthesis were to examine the level of E/E training being provided by transit agencies to highlight innovative and effective training approaches and, based on findings from the conclusions, to provide agencies with the opportunity to improve their training programs. Because maintenance is an area that is often overlooked, this synthesis gives it the greatest focus.

"These proceedings contain a summary of the Transportation Research Board conference on U.S. and international approaches to performance measurement for transportation systems that was conducted on September 9-12, 2007, at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies in Irvine, California. The theme for this third in a series of international conferences, Better Decisions and Better Communication, was selected to highlight opportunities for and experiences in using performance measurement as a strategic tool to better communicate goals and objectives and results to a wide range of stakeholder groups. Presentations highlighted cases in which performance measures have proved useful in guiding resource allocation decisions, improving day-to-day operations, establishing and demonstrating agency competency and accountability and, in some instances, making the case for more resources. The conference consisted of five plenary sessions, each followed by a series of corresponding, concurrent breakout sessions. The topics of the five plenary sessions were Performance Measures as an Organizational Management Tool to Establish Accountability, Communicating Performance Results Effectively to Your Customers, Data and Tools, Hot Topics (addressing the use of performance measures to gauge the effectiveness of tolling and congestion pricing and other innovative transportation strategies to address sustainability and safety issues), and Performance-Based Contracting and Measuring Project Delivery. The report documents the results of a demonstration of an AI-based program that acts as a "diagnostic assistant" for transit railcar propulsion systems. The diagnostic program uses a hybrid AI approach with both model-based reasoning and expert system rules. The AI tool was tested at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) on direct current chopper propulsion systems of the 3000 series railcars. The system was determined to be easy to use and effective in diagnosing propulsion system faults.
