Life is a journey. For some, it’s towards a well defined destination and for others, the destination is not clear. If we look at all the living organisms, they show some common traits. The primary trait is survival. They try to survive both collectively as a community and also as an individual. The author here shows how survival is just another form of immortality – in the sense that its opposed to death. Human beings too, are survivors. But they have some other faculties too. These faculties can possibly bring them out of survival mode – which is a twisted form of immortality, to a plane which is beyond survival – the real form of immortality. The author talks about the journey from survival mode, in the form of preservation & propagation, to the real immortality, in the form of discovering oneself to be the unchanging Reality of this Universe. The journey involves recognizing one’s basic traits in the form of pursuit of security and power (artha) on one hand and pursuit of desires and aspirations (kaama) on the other. Without denigrating one’s pursuits, how one can align them towards dharma and move towards freedom from artha and kaama. All those actions which are appropriate for a person at a given time come under dharma. Whether one should take this journey or not, is a choiceless choice. One may choose to ignore right actions (dharma) in this journey but then one has to suffer the consequences.
