DOWNLOAD EBOOKFocused historical and archaeological research has been undertaken to predict the types and locations of historical and prehistoric archaeological resources that may survive on the proposed new Federal courthouse site on the H156 Block in Sacramento, CA. The H156 Block was found to have high sensitivity for historic archaeological sites, as it was the 1850s site of Sacramento's Chinese settlement that burned to the ground twice. This Block has low sensitivity for prehistoric sites being within and bordering a slough. Significant archaeological resources, potentially eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (HRHP) under criterion [d], are predicted to have survived on many parcels on the H156 Block. A research design and identification and testing strategy, developed to satisfy the guidelines pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, are presented to guide archaeological investigation within the H156 Block.
