In recent decades oil analysis laboratories have used automatic particle counters to determine the number and size of particles in many oil wetted systems. Once determined, there has been the question of "what are they?" Logically, the next step is to investigate the make-up of the particles by extracting the particles and analyzing using emission spectroscopy and/or a filter membrane for view them under magnification. Characterizing the make-up of the particles is very useful in determining the source. A cost-effective action plan can be undertaken to rectify the identified problem once the particle type is determined. The problem with these two approaches is; emission spectroscopy analysis is often unreliable in identifying larger particles and; under optical magnification it is not possible to tell for sure the makeup of the particles. In some cases scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis is undertaken to further identify the particles. This proves to be time-consuming for the SEM operator and is left to the operator to judge which areas of the sample to investigate. This study illustrates the performance and innovative approach to resolving the aforementioned limitations on sizing and identifying particles using an "Automated Electron Beam Particle Analyzer" equipped with "Automated Feature Analysis" (AFA) software to characterize complex matrix of particles extracted onto a membrane filter from oil samples.

Particle Size Analysis reviews the development of particle characterization over the past 25 years and also speculates on its future. Interest in the subject has increased enormously over the years and this book highlights the changes and advances made within the field. This book is comprehensive in its coverage of particle size analysis and includes contributions on such characterization techniques as microscopy using fractal analysis, light diffraction, light scattering with the phase doppler technique, light observation, and photon correlation spectroscopy. A number of chapters address the interest in on-line in-stream particle size analysis and illustrate the progress being made in achieving this long sought after ideal of in-situ in-process particle characterization. Applications to other technological fields are detailed by chapters covering biological systems and the pharmaceutical industry. The subject of surface area determination is considered with particular emphasis on the measurements on porosity of powders, the characterization and comparability of reference materials, and the need for standards. Particle Size Analysis should provide stimulating reading for technologists, scientists, and engineers involved in particle characterization and powder technology worldwide.

Although man's environment, from the interstellar dust to the earth beneath his feet, is composed to a large extent of finely divided material, his knowledge of the propert ies of such materials is surprisingly slight. For many years the scientist has accepted that matter may exist as solids, liquids or gases although the dividing line between the states may often be rather blurred; this classification has been upset by powders, which at rest are solids, when aerated may behave as liquids, and when suspended in gases take on some of the properties of gases. It is now widely recognized that powder technology is a field of study in its own right. The industrial applications of this new science are far reaching. The size of fine particles affects the properties of a powder in many important ways. For example, it determines the setting time of cement, the hiding power of pigments and the activity of chemical catalysts; the taste of food, the potency of drugs and the sintering shrink age of metallurgical powders are also strongly affected by the size of the particles of which the powder is made up. Particle size measurement is to powder technology as thermometry is to the study of heat and is in the same state of flux as thermometry was in its early days. Only in the case of a sphere can the size of a particle be completely described by one number.

Excerpt from Particle Size Characterization This guide has been written to address some of these issues and concerns in this regard. The guide is by no means an exhaustive and comprehensive text on particle size analysis, but attempts to convey the practical issues that need to be considered when attempting analysis by some of the more commonly used techniques in the ceramics manufacturing community. The document is written to guide persons who are not experts in the field, but have some fundamental knowledge and familiarity of the issues involved. References to pertinent international standards and other comprehensive sources of information have been included. Data and information from studies conducted at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and experience gained over years of participation in international round robin tests and standards development, have been used in developing the information presented in this text. This book focuses on the practical aspects of particle size measurement: a major difference with existing books, which have a more theoretical approach. Of course, the emphasis still lies on the measurement techniques. For optimum application, their theoretical background is accompanied by quantitative quality aspects, limitations and problem identification. In addition the book covers the phenomena of sampling and dispersion of powders, either of which may be dominant in the overall analysis error. Moreover, there are chapters on the general aspects of quality for particle size analysis, quality management, reference materials and written standards, in- and on-line measurement, definitions and multilingual terminology, and on the statistics required for adequate interpretation of results. Importantly, a relation is made to product performance, both during processing as well as in final application. In view of its set-up, this book is well suited to support particle size measurement courses.
